Guess The Grade. Awesome Toned 1939-D Mercury Dime

I did both sizes, but I don't think you get enough detail off the small image.

This is PCGS' CoinFacts image. I sent 49 of my coins from the variety set in for pegiree, and they imaged 48 of the coins. This one is one of my favorites, and to see it as one of there images really is nice.

Opinions wanted.

    Those photos are so big that they are going to make even the smallest marks look huge. Having said that, the tiny mark on the chin should have prevented an MS69 grade. My guess is that your beautifully toned 1939-D joined the ranks of the other MS68 FB examples with outrageous toning.

    Wow! Love that encrusted toning. I call it "flaky". Great surfaces. 67+ or even 68. Beautiful coin!!!

    I was thinking at least 67FB too based on your pics.....I must be getting good cause that's what Larry guessed too!

    The coin in 67FB. I think after seeing the images in CoinFacts for these, and seeing one hand in Chicago. This could would probably upgrade and will be sent in at some point. There are less marks on this one than the MS68FB I saw in Chicago ANA.

    If that tiny mark on the cheek is it's only blemish I would guess it to be 68FB. The toning is different, but very pretty.

    I'd guess 68. Even at that huge magnification I see virtually no flaws. Very nice!

    67FB. For some reason, there seem to be a lot of 1939-D's with that look.

    Yes there are. There was a roll (or some such) of them about 17/18 years ago...many hit the market at about the same time. TomB has a great one that grades 68FB as I recall. There were enough of them you could actually pick and choose if you want to pay the price.

    The coin in the OP is probably 67 or 68 FB....depending on luster. There are a couple (I don't know the pop reports on this) 69s around as well.

    wow, that is a super frosty looking dime in the untoned areas! however, i am not a huge fan of the toning mainly because of the pattern it left...not the color. the motto looks very weak to me...but maybe that's cause i don't know much about this series. i do like the dime and i'll guess MS68FB.

    Either 68 FB or 69 FB. That is one of the 1939-D dimes from a really neat toned hoard that showed
    up years ago. One of them is on the cover of David Lange's book on Mercury dimes (2nd edition).

    There were also a number of 1940-D dimes in this hoard, but most of them did not have Full Bands.
    Still, they are really cool coins, and this hoard was the source for almost all MS 69 Merc dimes that PCGS
    has done.

    Wild colors!

    I would say 67FB.Bands should be more rounded for 68?

    If that Merc has up graded a big congrats...If not doesn`t matter still one heck of a coin...

    Good looking dime,all those in that little hoard grade from 67fb to 68+fb i believe.The one i sold at FUN i liked better for the color,but those are way cool!
    Great coins are not cheap,and cheap coins are not great!
