Question on thin wheat cent

I received this coin today. Although you can't see it in the image, the date is 1941. The coin is slightly smaller than the regular cent and much, much thinner than a cent. Any idea on what caused this? If it was a cent that was just cut in thirds would the design still be visible? Lincoln and the wheat ears feel raised just like on a regular cent. Color in image is off. Coin is the normal color of a circulated wheat cent. TIA.
