Early Commemoratives in Autographed, Limited Edition "vintage" holders

I saw a couple today, Bay Bridge, and Elgin. Both were signed by the coin's designer and numbered, the Bay bridge was numbered as xxx/1000. The Elgin was numbered but didn't have the fraction. I assume it is out of 1000 also. Interesting to run across these with Mercanti signing modern labels of coins he designed.

The holders were plastic and sealed, perhaps twice as big as a PCGS holder. They weren't graded. I would guess they were made in the mid 20th century, had to be made before the designer passed, which I assume they have by now.

Anybody seen these before?

Classic Commem's are a favorite of mine. I picked this up a month or so ago:

In the 1980’s, sculptor Jacques Schnier was induced to sign 1,000 cards that depicted him with his creation. These were sealed in plastic with ordinary coins that typically graded AU-55 to MS-63, and these souvenirs were sold to collectors.

Haven't heard of this being done with the Elgin. I'd be interested in hearing more via PM.

I have seen the one like BG pictured. I purchased one about 20 years ago but returned it because the signature was smeared. Haven't seen too many offered for sale over the years.

That's why I jumped on this one.Probably overpaid, but you only live once.

It's a series I enjoy, and who knows how many are left out there.

The coin is pretty nice actually: image

If I remember correctly, the Bay Bridge coin promotion was done by Continental Coin Corp. in Van Nuys, CA back in the mid 1980's as a way to make a few extra bucks. The vast majority of coins I have seen in the signed holders run from MS60-MS63. I believe the issue price was $300 per holder with coin. Now they trade for about $150. I just had a dealer off me five at $140 a piece.

The ones I saw today were priced more like the issue price above. If anyone is interested in either one of them please PM me and I'll be glad to pick it up for you. Both coins were as mentioned, on the low end of MS with no lustre. --jerry
