How is it decided which coins go up on Coinfacts?

stmanstman Posts: 11,352 ✭✭✭✭✭
I've often wondered how/who decides which coins go up on Coinfacts. Do they select what they feel are the best examples, the more eye-appealing ones?
I've also seen coins advertised as the "plate coin" on Coinfacts. Is that something special, or hype? I really don't know the answer here.

The CoinFacts coins advertised as Plate Coins is just hype, it really doesn't matter since PCGS chooses either coins
with photo's on-hand, or just the best and most representative examples. Hopefully they can expand the system
to display all/most coins of that date/type with stored photo's to give a great variety of grades.

    That's my take!
  • Hi,

I don't know who decides what, but a plate coin is one used to represent or illustrate the series in a book. Is it worth more? It is how you look at it. Many would pay a premium for a plate coin from a well known auction catalog or text book. I am sure Wayne Miller Morgan's are sought after.

    Best,
    Eric

<< <i>I believe they choose the best from their photos, I don't know if that means highest graded or the most eye appealing or a combo, but typically if it is their best it would be the nicest one they have which would be the most eye appealing and probably condition census. >>

Just about every TrueView I have ever had taken has ended up on CoinFacts. I suggest that if you want your coins on Coin Facts, have them photographed by PCGS.

Now that DOES make sense, doesn't it? Cost effective.

Several of my coins that appear in CoinFacts are different from the TrueView images.

When they do images like this one, which shows up with my cert number, they are taking images without being paid. This is one of the few they have done of mine with the coin not being a truevue, but done for coinfacts. I did not pay for this one.

Here is the cert number, so you can see what I am talking about.

  • << <i> All of my coins that are on a so-called coinfacts plate were never true viewed by me, so the question I have is how do you know if a coin is trueviewed and a plate. I am aware that when I put a cert# in up comes the coin's pertinent facts and a photo but I don't know if that photo that comes up is a trueview since I have never requested or paid for a trueview. Looks liek I need a little direction here.image >>

Ocassionally, I've purchased coins that were sent in for "True View" by a previous owner. I beleive this is the sorce of many "mystery" pics.

TrueVue images look like this image just below with all the PCGS information. The Coin Facts images look like the lower image without the PCGS information. The images without the information show up on cert verification even though you don't pay for the images.

Ask Ron or David they pretty well run that part of the show.

BTW as for images they have the right to use any that anyone posts on their site. It's in the TOS you signed when you joined.

While that is no doubt true, without the certificate number and proof that it matches the photo, if they use a coin posted here, they are assuming some risk. The coin could be in a different holder or different grade than what is posted here.

    Hey ST, long time....

We have a program that tells us whenever any condition census coin gets graded. We pull those and photograph them.

We also will add any coin that is photographed for a particular coin number. You can find them under "View All Coin Images".

The "plate coin" just happens to be the finest image that we have. It may or may not be the finest coin.

Don, what is considered "Condition Census" to PCGS?
    Top 5?
    Top 10?
  • STONE,

Condition Census coins are considered the top 10.

    Don,

Your program must be broken. I had sent in my Mercury Dime Variety set for pedigree. It had about five or so top pop varieties and none were imaged. I had also sent in the top pop 1953-D/D MS66RD and it was not imaged.
