You have one of the many 1972 Double Die Obverse coins. I think this is one of the tougher ones. Congrats.

The FS-103 is the variety number (the third type discovered).

Just to expand a little more...
DDO Means Doubled Die Obverse.
FS-103 (FS-033.53) is the Variety Number according to the CherryPickers Guide (CPG). FS-103 is the new numbering system for the CPG, FS-033.53 is the old numbering system the the CPG used

Assuming that the CPG numbered the doubled dies in the same order as CONECA, then Die #3 is actually the most common of the various doubled dies for the date. That does not mean it isn't worth a nice premium, especially in mint state red and most especially when properly attributed in PCGS plastic.

The 1 means its the only one graded AU58.
PCGS has graded a total of 16 examples, with the lowest being XF40

I believe this is one I found in a roll search a few months ago:

I'm pretty sure this is the obverse die #3. Can anyone verify? The CPG doesn't list much of a premium for this variety so I never had it slabbed. Looks MS-63ish to me. Assuming it's a die 3, would it be worth it to slab it considering the $50 premium for variety attribution?

I actually have one Tahoe98. The one that is on the link. I just got the grade back. I did't know what all those numbers meant.

...OK, i thought maybe you were trying to make the distinction between the others. they have markers to help tell them apart, as you may know.

i was going to post the markers if you were shopping for one.

Does pop1 for the grade give this coin any merit ? Also how does that work? Will the next coin at this grade be pop2 and so on ? And if so will the lables say pop1 ...pop 2 ...pop 3 Sorry for all the questions.

Thank you tahoe98. I don't know of any markers. I just assumed a double die was a double die.

There can be multiple double dies in any given year since many dies are used during the minting process. Check out Coppercoins.com for discussion about the many double die Lincolns.

...coppercoins has tons of info on lincolns. you'll see there are about 15 different 72 doubled dies there. they have certain markers to help zero in on the correct FS number. hth

The term "Pop1" generally refers to either a coin which is the only coin at the highest grade OR the only coin graded in any grade.

Pop2 could be used the same way but pop3 is beginning to stretch the concept by a bit. No, the PCGS Labels will NOT say "pop1" since that population number could change with the next submission.

As for your coin? A pop1 for an AU58BN does't add any merit since there are 204 of the coins graded across BN/RB/RD. For coins with this large of a population, only the highest grade gets serious merit from a "population" standpoint. Currently, thats an MS66RD.
