There was a rare piece of exonumia on ebay I wanted and to see where I stood tossed in a high bid 14 hours before ending and steamrolled the auction....
Not a single sniper showed and I won it 25% less then my max bid!

That can work.......however, only if the next underbidder has a bid high enough to expose your high bid.
Otherwise, your high bid will be hidden, and snipers will still go for the bids.
......I collect old stuff......
