Eliasberg 1892-CC Morgan????

Someone alerted me to this new ebay listing:

1892-CC Morgan Eliasberg

The seller history is, mmmm, "interesting" since he has never sold a coin, much less a coin with this provenance or value. The auction is also a private listing.

I'm not interested but I'd thought forum members might have an idea on whether this sale is legit or not. Comments?

I know little about EBay. What is a private listing anyways? TIA. MJ

The private listing feature on ebay prevents the ebay handle of the bidders from being visible by anyone other than the seller.

Not much buyer protection, as the seller wants payment by wire transfer only.

For some of us, they tend to be a red warning light that says "stay away".
    I reported it too.
    When in doubt, don't.

"Payment- direct bank transfer only. NO other methods for this coin."

That's the only red flag I need

Nice coin but as mentioned here already...
    1) He has not sold any other coins and this is a doozy to start with
    2) He would need to prove to me he has this coin in his posession
    3) No PayPal, no deal

I do like the idea of a "same date as photo" newspaper backround

  • I thought with Ebay, the seller must allow Paypal. ?

  • Forcing a bank wire in coins is contrary to ebay rules as far as I understand.

I was the winning bidder 2 listings ago and tried to get in touch with the seller.
I was even willing to wire the money as he asked- as long as I had a confirmed coin.

The seller was very quick in sending me his bank wire information (to a company name that could not be found throught google) and all email communication was never answered.

No communication- no money- no deal.

Still no response so a case was opened up against me.
I responded that the seller has not been communicating.

Still no response. Seller canceled the sale and relisted.

I believe this is the 4th time its being listed.
    scam is my guess
may the fonz be with you...always...

Ebay warned this seller to change his terms of payment to include Paypal. However, he did not
respond to them and their warning and did not make the change. Thus the listing was terminated.

He never responded to my question, either.

I guess we'll have to find it on some other venue in the future?

One interesting thing he did before this listing ended -- he posted a new picture with an overlay of a small scrap of paper over the slab with his ebay user ID. I am quite sure it was a photoshop job, but it was actually very nicely done.
