newby to roll searching- how am i doing so far?

so by newby i mean i just started. today was my first day searching anything. i ordered 5 boxes of kennedy's from the bank and found 1x '67 40% silver coin. i was just wondering if anyone who has been searching for a while knows if my results are average, better or worse than normal. i'm hoping to get more into this, but just haven't figured out exactly how i'm going to go about it. my grandfather has been a dedicated penny searcher for a long time, but only picks out the wheats and returns the rest from 2 box/week. since i live in a larger city than he does i was hoping to scale up the project by getting accounts at several banks and seeing if i could make a job out of searching... these first results though are quite disheartening.

regardless wish everyone the best in their searches!

It's not great but I've gone through 5 boxes of halves before and found nothing so it sure beats that.

For half dollars, there's really no such thing as "normal." For me and others I know, it's either usually hit or miss.
  • We roll searched as a family when I was a kid. We always looked forward to when my dad brought home rolls of coins from the bank. image

Reading posts from others who get boxes of Kennedys from the bank I cant recall any of them scoring big, could be wrong though. I have had pretty good luck just asking for whatever rolls might be laying around at my bank. The pic below was a score from last summer, one roll of uncirculated 64's, and a handful of 40%. I was happy.

You might get him a Cherry Pickers Guide, if he finds one decent variety coin it will be worth as much as all the wheats he's found.
Might as well look for more than only wheats if he's going through the effort of getting the boxes. image

  • he's getting old and can't see that great- he can still see the wheat/not wheat easily though, but he ends up needing to get a magnifying glass to read the dates, so he refuses to read them all it'd be too tedious.

    thanks for the replies
  • I gave up searching last year when after a dozen boxes I found nothing. image
  • I was doing well a year ago (averaging 4-6 40% and 1-2 90% per box)... my best was pulling 18 40% and 6 90% from $1000 (incl. a walker)

as silver soared up, I found less and less silver and more and more marker coins from other roll searchers.... i gave it a go again recently and didn't find anything worthwhile...

I've been searching cents, filling a Dansco, and loving it as much (or more) than halves... sure it's cool to find silver but I get just as excited finding early wheats, minor varieties, and the occasional Indian... pennies are easier to get rid of and I always hated dumping a ton of halves at the bank...

I do not think you can "make a job out of searching".
As someone said in a previous post on this topic, you can make way more in the same amount of time by getting
a job flipping burgers in a local fast food drive through!
    Good luck.

  • oh man I missed the "make a job out of this" part...

good luck w/ that... it's fun but I can't imagine getting returns you could live on... probably do better sitting next to a Coinstar machine and buying coin jars off old ladies before they dump it...

that said, can you "buy" (i.e. like a soda machine?) Coinstar machines? I wonder if you can make enough off the machine to pay for it then get the added bonus of searching the contents... fill a town or city w/ those machines and maintain them... that might be a better way to make $$...

I'm going to my bank today to deposit the $140 in halves that I got on Monday.
    I found nothing. image
    When in doubt, don't.

Never ever ever ever search boxes/bags of $500. Only search ROLLS turned in by bank customers. Last year when I had more time I was finding a good amount of silver every couple of weeks. The stuff is out there! Good luck.

I'd say you are correct , there's no real consistent profit , gambling gives better odds. I'd think for a lot of people roll searching can actually lead to a loss usually if time and travel to get them is considered.
In saying that ive found 2 confirmed 1970 small s cents in 2 years plus countless wheats and filled a modern zincoln album while working on memorial albums, some interesting errors and my favorite ones with the small counterstamps sometimes seen, must have been a popular thing to do 30 years ago.

Horrible advice. The secret is volume. I pushed through somewhere around $275k in change last year, probably found around $5k in silver. >>

My percentage of success was MUCH greater than yours. If my memory serves me correctly, while searching about $2000 face of rolls, I was able to find close to $800 worth of MELT. It is difficult to find that many rolls so you have to call around to the backs every week or two and pick up whatever is available. Yes, volume helps but THE RIGHT VOLUME is better. image

  • Commen sense and experience tells me with customer rolled coins the chances of it being pre-searched shoot up considerably.

I suggest actually doing something practical... like getting a job as a bank teller. Sounds better than pushing $2 million of halves...
