AU58 vs MS61

A lot of talk goes on but this result shocked me.

AU58 key date same auction
MS61 the very next lot key date same auction

The 61 looks like a better coin to me but the market values them the same at least on this day

The strike on both of these were not very good. I did like the 61 better than the 58 but the reed marks right down the center did not help it.

What was your thought on this 58? The planchett flaw was the only thing I did not like, oh and the $2K above PCGS guide

The S/CC is an amazing coin I would have made a run at if I hadn't already spent my entire 2012 budget in the first couple of days.

I agree, Here is an AU58 that sold last year for $500 more than either of these. A much nicer example IMHO.

Interesting, I was told at an ANA convention a couple of years ago that no more blank planchets could be slabbed because the Chinese fakes were too good...is this an older one, or was my info incorrect?

58's often look better than 61's. 58's are by definition "PQ AU's" and although they have wear need to be especially nice coins. Coins with "just a little rub" are just AU-55's. MS-61's can be pretty beat up Uncs.

I am shocked that the AU58 didn't bring MORE that the MS61. There are many people competing for the PCGS AU58 material, while MS61 coins have a reputation for being ugly dogs that are hard to sell.

I prefer the 58; that prolonged chattermark on the obv of the 61 is very distracting to me.
