A few gentle souls I had the pleasure to pm... [edit] and other members sorely missed.
I'll remember them as we start a new year on the boards.

Who was the member with the pugs? I think his name was Frank. He passed away a few years ago and was nice guy.

I recognize BigE, IGWT, Bear, and Kiefer. image

I disagree. Sorry, I'm not into feel good crap like that. I don't like naming highways after Highway patrol or road workers either.

I'm sorry these people aren't with us, but we can't retire stuff because someone used it and they have passed away.

Avatars are personal, highways and bridges are not.

Using a deceased forum member's avatar would be like going to a party wearing the mask of a deceased friend.

I woud have to agree with RYK here. Especially these people that used these avatars for so long. You didn't have to read the name to know who it was that posted. You notice the avatar out of the corner of your eye and read. These avatars become the identity of members after being here for a long time.

I agree that the avatars are their online forum pics and should not be shared or borrowed.
A youngin or a newbie might pull up Frank or Abe's old avatar and not know who they represented
to the rest of us regulars. They should be retired so they are not inadvertently, or purposefully used.

    They all will be missed.image

Frank Chiong didn't ever own a pug, he just kinda of looked like one.image That is the real reason he had a pug as an avatar. Frank lived about 10 miles from me. We were close friends and I am a better person just from knowing him. Some Sundays he would come over to my house and we would spend all day talking and playing with coins. Frank was a real asset to these forums. Always helpful and never a harsh word to anyone.

Whenever I see a suggestion like retiring avatars, I wonder how it can be done. Maybe it's the software engineer in me.

Can an avatar be removed from the list of available avatars without deleting it? Deleting it would mean it wouldn't show up in the members' post anymore. That's not any good.

If it can be removed from the list and still be on the server, how do you prevent it from being uploaded again under a new name?

What about others who use the same avatars? If it's still on the server, is there a way to prevent them them from using it? It would require being able to limit an avatar to specific users.

Would it be fair to others using the same avatars, when they might have been using it for years?

Retiring avatars would likely require database and code changes. Supposing they decided to do that? It would risk introducing bugs that could bring the forum down, all because smoebody decided an avatar should be limited to one person.

Design changes that can be expressed in one sentence and require hours of development are always fun. Let's do it. image
