Are there any books specifically on Key-Date coins?

DD Posts: 1,997 ✭✭✭
I feel like there could be a lot of potential for a book on key-dates, semi-keys and classical rarities in specific grades. This is an area I've just recently been exploring and with posts by specific forum members it's become apparent that a LOT of series have coins that aren't keys but they...are? That is, they're not low-mintage but hard to find, at least in 'worthy' condition.

Plus, I would hate to finish this book and find out that it's already been done. image.

Certainly not a book, but John Feigenbaum or one of the D Lawrence guys just wrote an extensive article on key dates in various series in the most recent edition of the Greysheet. He gives his opinion on which to buy, and in which grades, etc. May be worth checking out if you are interested in the topic.

<-- I have been kicking around the idea of writing one and have written some stuff...mostly just notes.

A Key/Semi-Key Book would be very different from the 100 Greatest Coins. Sure there is some overlap, duh...but it would be a very very different book and it would address each and every series. At least that is the way I had it planned....and I would not go past 1964 with my book.

  • Walkerguy21D: thank you for mentioning my article. I strongly believe in key date coinage which was the basis for my CDN article last October. I have since posted the article on my blog site (link to article) and I would love to interact with collectors about other coins. Just about every U.S. coin series has some number of key dates and the term "key dates" also means different things to different people.

D: this is a great idea for a book, etc and my article was originally intended to be the start of a series of articles but I haven't gotten started on the next one. I'd really like to look at gold coinage next.

Check out QDB's More Adventures in Rare Coins. He goes in depth on 50 key and/or historic and/or interesting coins/types. The book is hard to find, but it is one of my favorite of all coin books.

Wasn't there a book a while ago that gave the diagnostics for a number of key coins - "Striking [something]", I think it was called - so that a collector could avoid buying a counterfeit?

Or, are you thinking about something completely different?

Bill Fivaz wrote an article "Diagnostics on Key Date Coins". A most helpful reference work.
I think enough is out there, one must just look for it. One of the best ways to study a key date coin is
via Heritage Auction Archives with nice photos you can enlarge.
    Best of luck, D.
