25 Anniversary Proof Silver Eagle "frosting"

Hello Y'all,

I've been following this forum for quite some time and I decided to take the ole plunge and become an active participant, as opposed to a curious bystander. I am fortunate to have a pair of NGC 70 sets and I also have some 2011 NGC proof 70 ASE's that arent from the sets... what I have noticed is the "frosting" on the non-set proofs is more white whereas there is more of a gray frosting on the ones from the 25th ann. set. Has anyone else noticed this? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

  • I haven't compared the set vs. nonset coins next to each other. Some folks here think they may have done a special run for each one of these coins. The bullion set vs. nonset look a little different IMO.

My opinion is that there is a difference in the frost.

The anniversary sets frosting appears more luminescent to me while the standard PROOFs appear more flat with the snakeskin being the most prominent feature.

    JMHO.
  • Yes the are different. I think this set has 4 unique coins with a 100,000 mintage.
