The articles I've read about this issue say that the reason for the stars on the reverse is unknown. I always figured the 94 stars represented the date of the coin.

A slow day at the mint was the explanation that seems most plausible. I would make an offer to the OP, but then my wife gets snarfy anytime I make 5 figure coin purchases. I got doghoused while living in Europe when she found my bank statement with the cheque to that NYC auction venue.
