Value of Complete Kennedy half collection?

Part of my numismatic goals for 2012 is to pare down the number of collections, and to focus on improving a couple of sets. One area I would have less trouble parting with is the referenced set. I put together a very nice set of Kennedies (ms64 or better) from mint sets, proof sets, raw purchases and assembld it in a nice dansco. It is complete 64 - 2011 PDSS.... I would like input as to the best way to part with it and a fair selling price to either a dealer or collector.

Thanks for any insight!

....and Happy New Year!

I'd think $1,500. if it includes the silver proofs and the 1998 SMS.

Is that a realistec price to a dealer?

The problem with these is that there are so many slapped together sets on eBay it depresses the prices. That price should be fair but the set would have to be seen by a knowledgeable dealer.

the market is very saturated and the demand is low on these sets. Shop the set around for an offer among dealers. The BST is a good option as well Images and specific information on the coins is a must though. image

You're not likely the get more than $800 at a dealer. And, as noted, there are so many sets available at any given time, and so many of these sets are crap, that the market isn't exactly clamoring for them. Your best bet would be to offer it here in the BST.

About 750.00 max is about best youll get from a B & M, unless he just really needs a few of the better coins. Quality of the coins in the set will also make a huge difference to the downside of that number.

No, a Dealer might offer half that. To a collector, such as myself, I'd be a strong buyer at a premium set complete, with all issues intact at $1.5K

It is a difficult series to locate with matching choice/gem coins and superb proofs.

A major local dealer near me tries to avoid buying either Kennedy half or Eisenhower dollar sets in Dansco albums (or any other albums.) He says very simply ... they don't sell.
    All glory is fleeting.
  • Unfortunately ..there are many ..many..put together sets of this Fine series...and that's what the problem is ..TOO MANY..!!!..The only coins that will become relavant in this set are the early issues of 1965 to 1967.....IMO ...if you cannot find the best grades of these then your Kennedy set is just like all the others...image

This is a well matched set of very nice coins IMHO. I have been called "very particular" about my coins by a local B&M dealer here because I went through rolls of his coins to assemble the sets I collect/ed....

I did not buy the 98 SMS coin, which obviously adversely impacts the value....

Depending on the quaility of the coins. 3+ quality coins fetch higher prices, that is if you can find another collector with same interest.
I used to freely give away the Kennedy halves from the mint sets I searched for Jefferson nickels. There were some very nice coins. But I also thought that once they were seen, the recipient would insist on paying something for them. Most of the time, I was thanked and received nothing.

The more qualities observed in a coin, the more desirable that coin becomes!

Some coins are better than others. The most I paid was about $1100 and it was "trade-in" value. Which in reality means that my mark up for the item he wanted was inflated, too image

The value of the set is also reflected in the existence or not of the Accented Hair 1964 and its condition. It is always the few coins that are outside of the standard PDSS issues that affect the value. I will say the quality from the Mint sets and Proof sets over the past 10 years has made for a very nice presentation. (I have a complete set w/o the SMS coin).
