Here is why I think you are a fool if you buy MS/PR 70 ASE 20th or 25th sets!

Just my opinion so flame away, but why in hell-0 would you pay strong money for these coins with the knowledge that they, well are a PIA

Goes with the territory, maybe. Such is the bane of all "perfect" moderns, especially the silver ones, I would think.
You know what they say......"If it plays in Peoria"..........

Well, let's see
Yeah, you're right, proof ASE spotting is super, duper, rare. Stupid me. Prices are climbing hand over fist more and more every day.
Are you freagin drunk? ARe you mad they posted you 1/10 oz. AGE ebay auction?
Guess we'll see who's right in a couple years.
I have my opinion, but I'm not going to feed another pointless fire started on this subject.
ps. Not sure what you're calling strong prices...you can get these sets, graded or not, for very very cheap right now. Either way you can't lose.
Also, not EVERY Silver Eagle is going to spot.

Yeah you're right. I'm sending mine to the refiner since every single one will spot (It must be true, you seem so knowledgeable). In hindsight, I have no idea why I even bought mine.
This just in...
TexasNationals of the PCGS forum reports that ASEs might possibly milkspot.
Also, TN believes that if you purchase 2011 25th or 2006 20th Anny sets for big money you are a fool.
<< <i>Keep the receipt - PCGS has a grade guarantee.
Exactly. No brainer.

Thanks to PCGS, you're protected if it spots and goes down in value. If it doesn't, and goes up in value, you're a winner. It doesn't get much better than that...why would you buy anything other than 70's?

So who here [if anyone] has actually lost money [purchase price vs buyer protection payout] due to spotting of silver eagle coins?
<< <i>Maybe off topic but could somebody explain what the pcgs buyer protection buyout ia? Is any pcgs coin covered or only if you are the original person who sent the coins in? >>
any member can send any slabbed coin in.
<< <i>i recently sent one of the 20th anniv proof 70 in for spotting and pcgs was able to remove spots and keep it a 70. its nice to have the coin back without spots. i also sent in two ATB`s where spots could not be removed and was given my choice on cash back with raw coins or more cash and they keep coins. both were very good offers. as for the OP`s link the price is too steep for spotted coins. >>
SWEEEEEEEETTTTTT!!!!! This is good to know. I have perfect 70s then with no marks then!!!!
Not everything is about maximizing the return on a collection.
I firmly believe in numismatics as the world's greatest hobby, but recognize that this is a luxury and without collectors, we can all spend/melt our collections/inventories.

I don't think it's much of an issue really. IMO the hundreds (or maybe thousands) of speculators currently hoarding these graded sets and individual pieces could care less about the coins themselves, it's all about the label on the holder and at what price they can flip them. In addition, as long as the 3rd party services continue to guaranty their grades and the spots can be easily dipped off and the coins put into fresh holders it doesn't seem like a big thing IMO.

I feel that there is probably a good story here...

I don't think that "membership" is required to take advantage of the PCGS Grade Garantee. A call to customer service can address this but if that were the case, then PCGS Graded coins would ONLY have "grade garantee" value to either PCGS Authorized Dealers or Collectors Club Members.
