What to look for in bag of wheaties...

I have a lot of wheat head pennies to sort through but Id like to ask the folks on here what I should be looking for. Key dates? Errors? Etc. I did a search on this forum and can't find this info. Any help would be greatly appreciated as always. Happy New Year! image

Get yourself a Cherrypickers' Guide if you don't already have one. Search for those varieties. I'll bet you find some!

    The usual keys:
    1909-S VDB
    1909-S
    1914-D
    1922 Plain
    1931-S
    1955 DDO

    Semi keys:
1909 VDB (would probably save the plain 1909 as well)
    1922-D
    1924-D
    1926-S
    Most mintmarked coins from 1909-1915
1931-1933 any mintmark (not really semi keys, but I've been able to sell these before at a small premium)

    Varieties:
1943 PDS Copper (good luck, remember that if it sticks to a magnet, it's plated)
1944 PDS Zinc (again, good luck)
    1943 D/D
    1944 D/S
    1958 DDO (good luck)

Edited to add: If you really want, pick up a Cherrypicker's Guide for a more complete list (including minor varieties)

If you have the time, a good microscope or loupe and good eyes there are some nice repunched mint marks and doubled dies that can be found. Check out Coppercoins.com - it has listings and photos for all dates and mints. Also remember that sometimes there might be something interesting under the gunk that can accumulate around the mint mark. Good luck and have fun!

You should be able to pick up a used one off of Ebay, or Amazon etc.

The latest one out is the Fifth Edition Volume I Half Cents to Jefferson Nickels. This one was last updated in 2009. The cover has an image of a 1955 DDO Cent and a Three Legged Buffalo.

I also use a 30x glass and a microscope. You will find these as very helpful.

Good Luck, and you are going have a lot of fun with the sore eyes.

  • Set aside some time, get a good loupe and start looking, you can look up by date here and find all varieties.

I have found most of the varieties including 36 DDO #1,2 and 3 the 44 D/S in MS both RPM #1 and #2, the 35 DDO, 55 DDO #2 in MS and lots of others. Good times!

Save anything from 1933 and before regardless of date/MM or condition.

Any you don't want to keep for yourself, you can resell in rolls at a premium.
