Question about "market maker" dealers and the internet

I recently noticed a print ad in a club journal by a rare coin dealer that states they are a market maker in a particular series. I went to their website and they had none of those coins listed in their inventory. This got me thinking. Is it possible in this day and age to be a market maker in a series without a strong internet presence? Can it still be done exclusively with print advertising, a storefront, or going to shows? Can the experts still rest on their laurels or do they need to get into the 21st century?

And then there are folks who claim to be market makers and have grand internet websites and fancy schmancy inventory and are as close to being market makers as my dog is.

Bottom line: Don't believe everything you see on the internet.

I'm a market maker in divorce... but I don't have any current inventory. And yes, I do have an internet presence! image

I guess it would depend on the market... if it's something that's in very high demand, it's possible that all the items in inventory would be swept up before they made it to the internet.

The true market maker is ebay because of the volume. Smart buyers go where they get the best price and best service. Smart dealers stay abreast of their competition and try to compensate for their own higher prices with better service.

There is no defined definition of the term "market maker" in the business. Sellers who sell one coin per month can proclaim themselves "market makers".

However true market makers on many series do not deal with the public and have no website. One example is the largest buyer of silver dollars does not have a website and does not deal with the public or dealers he doesn't know.

If you are publicly claiming to be a market maker or market mover, you probably aren't one.
