Better lookin' than the heavily corroded holey example I have (or had), but I only paid $30-something for mine.

It's worth $90, even if it's not a beauty contest winner. In fact, it was a pretty good buy at that.

Ugly being in the eye of the beholder, there are a few Fugios that I think are uglier than the subject coin on Heritage that sold for more (just a little). While this one is heavily pitted, it doesn't have other nasty problems, like hacked rims, an orange glow peeking through brown shoe polish, a greenish-black scaly crust, being bent, and a nasty scratch. While I would have passed on this coin as well (unless I saw that it was a rare variety), someone looking for a Fugio under $100 isn't going to find anything nicer than that.

Yeah, I bought it from dthigpen. I'd have to excavate in my PM history to see how much. $30...ish. $40, tops, if I remember correctly.

Like the coin in the OP, mine ain't no beauty contest winner. In fact, it's worse than the one in the OP. But for the price, I thought it a suitable ornament for the Holey Coin Vest, since it IS a Fugio, and identifiable as such. A "nice" addition to my cullection.

As a detectorist who's dug coppers of this era, it is plain to me that this piece spent a good long time in the ground.

  • The piece cited by the OP looks like a $100 version to me.

I have one in the approximate condition as lordmarcovan's that was struck off center. I paid $28 for in the 80's.

Frank, did you buy the coin in the OP?

I'd have to say, with the clear date, as you pointed out, not to mention the readable legend, I'd say $90-100 is not outta the question for that, IMHO. It's a low-end example, for sure, but it has some positive attributes for a "budget" example. Obviously, it's a good bit better than my $30-ish holey. Is it worth three times as much? Hm. Maybe. Probably.

As a generic piece it does nothing at all for me...and I have a high level of acceptance with colonials. Id need to peg that as an R4-R6 variety to enjoy it.

    I would consider it.

nope, I was an under-bidder image but as I related it was just an impulse bid I didn't want to go deeply on.
