Is the uncirculated silver eagle a good buy at new price?

The mint just repriced the uncirculated silver eagle to $45.95 is this a good time to snag a few? Im new to the forum so I hope im not asking a dumb question....

If you really want to know...Just look at the mitage figures...if you have one or two ..sit on 'em.The more that people buy these it just adds to the mintage.Don't buy more if you don't have to....Keep the MINTAGE ..LOW...

When either they run out, or when they start selling the 2012W coin (probably late April if I were to hazard a guess). Whichever comes first
While the burnished ase looks like it will be the lowest yet I wouldn't bet the farm on the coin as it's quite likely the 2012 may end even lower. Remember there won't be a 26th ASE set next year to boost sales and interest in burnished products was anemic previously so the fact they brought the burnished ASE back was a bit surprising to start with. I collect all of the burnished offerings from the mint, but these coins are going to take time to mature. Most people don't care about them right now so if you're looking for instant price appreciation once they go off sale than I think you should look elsewhere. If you have time on your side though and want to squirrel a stack away for 10, 20, or more years than buy all means back the truck up and stack away

As for how many that entirely depends on your financial position and collecting/stacking goals. I would certainly buy a few of these at the reduced prices, but if buying 10, 20, or even 100 is no big deal for you than by all means take a position in them and put them away for the distant future. Just be picky and send any imperfect coins back to the mint (assuming you buy them direct). As for grading, yes I would send the best to pcgs at some point, but I wouldn't be in a hurry about it. You can always submit them later if need be...

Well that brings up another question then. You say assuming I buy them direct. Should I be buying them in the secondary market? It would have to be online as I live in a low populated state and we don't have many dealers ha!

If you needed a new digital camera certainly you would price shop via the internet, right? As such why should buying coins, particular modern coins, be any different? Check MCM (moderncoinmart), apmex, coastcoin, gainsville, etc. for the best price possible and then place your order. You'll find that often times you can buy slabbed 69 examples of certain modern mint products for less than the mint's original retail price. Good luck on whatever you decide.
Some serious changes will have to occur to Silver before I'll ever see my $15 per coin again!

What do you think the odds of the mint dropping this coin on the first of the year is? I guess I'm just confused when one person says they sell these until they run out and your saying it could be the first of the year? Thanks for any insight

There is another good thread with a poll going as to when the Mint will drop the 2011-W. IMO, they probably produced a similar quantity as the 08-W =~ 535,600. They only offered these in Sept. so there has not even been six months to sell these. They will continue to sell them until supplies run dry or until the 2012-W--whatever comes first. There is nothing keeping them from selling as of Jan 1st 2012 so there is no reason for them to quit but WTH knows.
It's worth the spot silver price plus a premium for minting cost and assay cost plus shipping and that cutsie little blue box....I'm thinkin...36.95.

P.S. some here will agree and some will not, but at the end of the day it is 1 oz of silver........nothing more, nothing less.
I will add that it's what it is to you that is the question here, I have several things that I collect and enjoy that others might think are useless, so I guess what I'm saying is if you have to ask the worth, maybe it's not something you really want, the ones in the tubes are alot cheaper and they are made in the same place.....

Are you a true collector of bullion coins for the coin value?
If you are wanting to buy with hopes that this coin will have a increased value because of the year and the mintage amount then maybe but it is a gamble and you will have to wait a few years to see.
OR
Are you bullion buyer for the silver value?
If you are wanting to buy with the hopes that silver is going to go up agian then I would wait and see what the release price is for the 2012 or see if the price drops again on the 2011.
IMO silver will drop to about $20 +/- $2 in the very near future.

To play devil's advocate, if you go with the 2011-W you are getting a coin with a superior strike (I've seen the 2011-Ws out of the 25th sets and they destroy the regular bullion in overall quality) and a coin with probably ~1/80 the mintage of the 2011 silver bullion eagle. Depends on whether you're betting on the silver horse or the numismatic horse. With these it's also a little of both. Recent ebay listings of the 2007-W (the highest W so far) are in the 40-50 range for raw. I am a believer of Eric Jordan's thought train that the ASE Ws are the modern equivalents to CCs but that's just me. Personally I am not a buyer of these now as I have a few in the 25th sets but will want more if there is an indication they will come in below the 06-W which there is no proof of yet.
I hope I didn't offend anyone, but as a collector and observer, the market is maturing and the internet has leveled all playing fields.

Be easy Solo...maybe he's an older gentleman in his 60s or 70s who is very noobish when it comes to computer use. I know my dad is, he's 69 and has only been using the computer for about 2-3 years. I get frustrated quite a bit because he asks me the most basic questions about computers or where to find information online.
Maybe he's one of them but if he's not then its just plain laziness

Population Reports only apply to whats been "graded" at a [articular Third Party Grading (TPG) Service.
As for the 2011-W, the minting is done. Whatever is left will either sell out (given the number of threads that have been posted) or be destroyed once the 2012-W is released (if its ever even released).
The US Mint has taken a literal beating over the past couple of months due to the 25th Anniversary sets and folks need to remember that the minting of the "W" and Proof Silver Eagles is NOT a requirement of law and is totally up to the US Mint on how much they'll produce and sell. If they continue to get trashed over these coins, I would not be surprised of they simply dropped them. (Let's not forget 2009 and 2010)
