Dogs are God's best creation. Most ask for nothing but give everything. Lucky is at a place that many call the "Rainbow Bridge."
Just this side of Heaven is a place called the Rainbow Bridge. When a Dog dies that has been especially close to their humans companions here, this Dog goes to the Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows, hills and wide open spaces for our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water, sunshine and all of the things they love, except us. Here they are warm and comfortable.
All of the Dogs who had been ill or old are restored to the health and vigor, those who are hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days gone by. The Dogs are happy and content except for one small thing; they miss the ones that are so special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day finally comes when one suddenly "stops" and looks into the distance. His eyes are very bright and intense, his eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run away from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs caring him faster and faster.
"You"have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face, your hands again caress the beloved head and ears and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your friend, so long absent from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then, you "cross" the Rainbow Bridge together........
My heart is with you my friend. You might Google the "Rainbow Bridge." True humans understand. Those without humanity do not. A human who has not shared his/her life with a Dog has lost!!! (Dalmatians rule)

So sorry to hear of the loss of your buddy. Good dogs are good dogs because they are in good families. They give you 100% without asking for anything in return. I really think sometimes that God put dogs on earth to teach us humans a thing or two.
Might I suggest a book or two from Dr. James Herriot? All things great and small. All things bright and beautiful. ...and the good lord made them all. Three books written by DVM James Herriot. THESE books will touch your soul. Some great stories with some great wisdom.
Thanks to all who have posted, sent PM's, or gave this some reflection. From the cool and funny pictures of your dogs being dogs (and other the cats and critters being themselves), the stories, and just the kind words, you all have all helped ease the hurt. Please give all your animals a hug, get out their favorite toy and play with them, throw the ball or stick, take them for a walk or a hike, and just enjoy an attention moment with them while you still have them.

I feel for you claychaser, any dog i'v seen that had any Boarder Collie in the blood seemed to be a real pleasure. We lost our 13 year old cat "Precious" a month ago, hang in there Pal.
I do not have pictures, but 2 years ago my cat got ripped apart in front of my parents just before xmas. Cat ran out the door and there was some loose dogs roaming the neighborhood-right place wrong time.

I'm a certified (or certifiable) critter lover (seven cats and three dogs here, now that we've given away the pony). So I can certainly empathize with your sadness.
But it sounds to me as though ol' Lucky was indeed lucky, and lived a nice long life. One of our childhood family dogs also lived to be sixteen, and survived long after I'd grown up and left my mother's household. She (the dog, not my Mom) had to be put to sleep the very same day my maternal grandmother died, so Mom lost her dog and her mother on the same day. Both the old family dog and my grandmother had led long and full lives, though, so it was bittersweet rather than tragic.
Rather than post a lucky coin or a dog picture (though I've got plenty of both), I'll just llink back to a recent story I posted about an UNlucky coin, which also happens to include plenty of dog pictures.

It is very difficult to lose a member of your family. And our pets are definitely member of our families. You can't match the love and devotion a dog or cat has for its people. We have found that a good way to cope is to remember all of the good times you had with your pet. Eventually the good memories will be what you think of when you think of your pet, rather than dwelling on the pain of your loss. The fact that your loss is so painful is because you loved your pet so much. Knowing you were the best owner you could be is also something important to remember. We have you in our thoughts and prayers.

I made this "Dog Tag" token for my wife the other day. I took the photo on 24 December 2011, and I engraved the token the same day. The engraving, combined with patina and burnishing, reveals the original image of our Corgi "Buddy".
I had 2 dogs. Lost one last year; she was only half mine, sharing custody with my ex-roommate. She was 15 when I consented to putting her to sleep (she had already lost quality of life the previous year). I thought I'd be fine, but it turned out I was inconsolable. We had her cremated, and my ex-roommate keeps the ashes.
My second dog, whom I raised from a puppy, is now 12 and showing slight signs of age. She's a small-ish bundle of devotion, a CSpaniel/Shih-tzu mix weighing in at ~23 lbs. Given last year, I'm already starting to panic.
My ex-wife and I also adopted kittens. She took them when she left; good riddance to her, but I miss the cats.
Lost our 16 yr old "rescue" border collie in June. It really hurt for a few weeks. One of those earlier photos in the thread was the spitting image of Barney. Time will heal your wounds but we will never forget them.
