Since I've seen it posted here that there's "no such thing as a stupid question"...

...I'm going to ask a two-parter. (1) Is there any way to determine the year that a PCGS coin was slabbed and (2) I recently purchased an half eagle Indian (for sentimental purposes) graded 62+.
I noticed that one edge of the "inner plastic ridge" on the slab was broken off. I am thinking about sending it in for re-slabbing and while I'm at it, possibly having it re-graded. Is there a possibility that it could not only not get "a bump" to 63, but could also lose the + on the 62? Now remember, you guys said there's no such thing as a stupid questionimage

    1. The style of the label and holder can give you a window, and some detective work might be able to pin it down further, but there's no straightforward way to query PCGS to find out.
    2. Yes.

    Neither are stupid:

    1. Some slab models were used for certain time periods, but by-and-large, the answer is generally no.

    2. If you send it for reholdering, they will not evaluate the coin. It will come back with the same grade that it had when you sent it in. If you send it for regrading, it can come back with a different grade...or maybe not.

They don't want you to know that.

On the 2nd question, although there is a chance of losing the + on a regrade, I believe you would be compensated for the downgrade under the PCGS grade guarantee.

The $5 Indians are known for getting grades all over the map. I've cracked out old holder 62's that I thought were quite PQ for the grade and ended up with AU58's.
In this series, unless you have fresh-old holders, it's far more likely imo your grade will do down than up. If you send your 62+ in for regrade odds are pretty good it will
come back 62+. While the chances of a higher grade are slim, the odds of a lower grade are even slimmer. PCGS would just pay you the difference if they decided to
downgrade the coin to 62 while submitted under regrade.

Thanks Roadrunner. From your tagline, I'm guessing you might also visit TFMetalsreport.com.
