"Ancillary" Coins

MidLifeCrisisMidLifeCrisis Posts: 10,614 ✭✭✭✭✭

<< <i>Ancillary - Providing necessary support to the primary activities or operation of an organization, institution, industry, or system. >>

My primary collection is a type set of colonial era coins, each with a traceable provenance.

I am also building a collection of Pillar Reales by denomination minted in Mexico (which circulated widely in colonial era America).

I am interested in growing this collection of ancillary coins. Here's a list of coins that a friend recommended to me for this collection:
Pistareen
Portrait Reales (all denominations)
1749 UK Coppers
Lion 1/2 and Daalder
Gold Guinea

What else would you recommend?

    Hey MLC,

A lot of other dates of UK halfpennies most likely circulated in the US at some point. The are some really pretty regal pieces (mostly 1770-1775) than can be had at a very decent price given their age and their use. While they mostly circulated in the UK, it is still a nice addition to a US collection of circulating coinage.

Also, some of the French Canadian pieces not listed in the Red Book most likely leaked over the border to the US. I am not sure off hand how many pieces there are that could have possibly circulated here, but there certainly are some that are not R.B. listed as US colonials.

You know what I would recommend?

Take the ANA Summer Seminar class I teach with Erik Goldstein. It will be money better spent, and with a longer impact on what you collect, than any individual coin you could buy with the same money.

We dish the dirt on all the things that circulated in early America, based on sound documentary and archaeological evidence, not guesswork or tradition. You'll be amazed what is on the list, and what is not.

Hint: a lot of the stuff in the Redbook is not. Why? Because it never circulated here in any statistically significant quantity.

Why 1749s, in particular? They were shipped here officially by the TON by an Act of Parliament.

You know how many coins in the Redbook were authorized to circulate in what became the US by an Act of Parliament?

    None.

And by the way, I may have a lead on some pistareens ...

Methinks this thread needs an ancillary coin from the Antilles.

The Isles du Vent, or Windward Islands, were a French possession in the lesser Antilles (like Martinique and nearby islands). These coins, struck in just 1731 and 1732, turn up in America more often than such a scarce type should, suggesting that a lot of them made their way here as part of the West Indies trade.

I was just going to say that if you collect Pistareen, make sure you poke some air holes in his slab, or a lot of collectors will get mad at you. image

For more collecting ideas, start by getting a copy of 'America's Foreign Coins' by Oscar Schilke and Raphael Solomon (1964).

I concur with the idea of "Ancillary" Coins, including the Portrait Reales. This is my denomination set -- 1/4 reale to 8 reales -- all with the Carlos IIII portrait (except for the tiny 1/4R) that would be contemporary with the early federal coins of the U.S.

Everyone has a Wood's Hibernia in their colonial collection, right? Well, it's just an Irish coin, albeit one that circulated in America in significant numbers.

How about another Irish coin, the 1601 and 1602 pennies of Elizabeth? A few dozen have been found just within the small spit of land that has been excavated at Jamestown, suggesting that they were the single most common copper coin in 17th century Virginia.

Chew on this: there have been perhaps 10 times as many of these dug out of American soil than St. Patrick's halfpence, farthings, and Voce Populis combined.

It's almost an insult to the half Joe of Portugal/Brazil to call it "ancillary." It was, simply, the single most common and most important gold coin in 18th century America.

If you want to collect gold coins of early America, start here. When Jefferson was conceiving the eagle denomination, he started by saying "the golden piece will be 1-5 more than a half Joe ... "
