So, are a great coin collector, or a set collector, or both?

I mean, it really used to be all about the set. Now it's all about the coins. Well, it's still about the set too, but more about the coins.

Now holes don't bother me. Vast emptiness, more so.

Duplicates don't bother me as much either.

I mean, some dates come nice, and others, not so much.

I guess the moral of the story is, don't buy "dreck" just to fill a hole, and don't turn down a nice coin just because you already have one.

'Nuff said.

I flip flop.. sometimes I want a complete set, but sometimes I wonder what's the point in buying a buncha gem silver and clad generic Roosevelts when I could buy one 1970 "No S" proof Roosevelt dime instead for the same money. It would take up a lot less room, if nothing else.

I'll buy any coin if the price is right for the condition.

I guess it depends on your funds. I'm trying to fill a hole and just recently turned down a nice upgrade so I wouldn't be caught short if my filler coin comes along. JMHO.

    Set collector definitely.

My current set is the 7070 and I am coming close to being finis he's with that.

After this is done, I am bouncing around a few ideas. They will be sets but not the classic date or date mm sets. More year sets with a lot of options (1883 for example), colonials, etc.

Other more traditional ideas, large cents in unmessed with vg/f, or circ cam capped bust halves.

And of course, there is always the box o 20.
Many buy and sell transactions. Let's talk!

It's not "dreck" if it's rare and hard to find.image And yes, I'm a set collector.image

I am mostly a set collector, both type sets and date sets. But I do occassionally buy something just because it's pretty.

Too true, and often, if you hold out for coins that are both rare and stunning, you are setting your goals too high, and will most likely never own what you really want.

So I ask... is that so wrong?

I can't afford coins that are rare and stunning, I have to settle for one or the other. image

I used to be a set collector, but know I just have a relatively few coins with 'wow' - usually rarity, or a great story. Who knows what I will like in 20 years.

I think that most people are some combination of the two.
