PCI sample slab sells for $190!

For fun, I was watching this auction of a first-generation sample slab from PCI. It's a photo slab with a 1955-S dime. These are tough to find and come up every once in a while. The last high price I saw one sell for was a few years back and it went for around $150.

This one languished in the $50-60 range until the end of the auction. But there were a few bidders really interested in it. I was surprised to see the auction end at $190. Looks like there are some hungry sample slab collectors still out there. Congrats to the winning bidder.

    image I'm kidding, of course. I love those early Photoslabs too, in fact I have a couple with clipped planchets in them. Very interesting how popular those still are with collectors - I know the rights to that slab went through several different hands over the years, and recently someone was marketing waffled coins (Mint scrap metal) in them.

    Yep, there have been about a half-dozen companies who have used that slab. The waffle scrap, I believe, is being sold through Global which uses a thicker slab of the same length and width.

    $190 beyond stupid? But it's a $5 coin and $185 in plastic. It's not like it's an NGC Black Slab! image

    I love those old PCCI phot certified slabs but I have never seen a sample one before. One of the nicest morgans I have ever owned came out of an MS66 PCCI morgan slab...I crossed it to PCGS in the same grade image

    I found an old photo of my examples. I think I sold the Accugrade Ike some time ago, but I still have the Lincoln clip in the PCCI holder. Anyone know what generation that slab is, and if it has any premium?
