Though it looks like they are going to fabricate some watches using the material.
If ever made into coin form, I have total confidence in the Mint's ability to scratch the hell out of it!

The coin would have to be cast since a planchet made of this material would be so hard that a die would shatter trying to strike it.

A pretty cool achievement thought... What do you suppose this will do for the future of gold items? Teeth, coins, jewelry? Does this mean gold jewelry that will never wear out? Family heirloom passed from generation to generation... Gold sales drop because no one needs to buy new stuff... hmmmm
A tidbit of info:
The Karat system:
24 karat (24k) is pure, 100% gold. Once you go down from 24 karat, the percentage of gold goes down in proportion.
18 karat (18k) gold is 18 parts gold and 6 parts other material (75% gold)
16 karat (16k) gold is 16 parts gold and 8 parts other material (66.6% gold)
10 karat (10k) gold is 41.6% gold. This is the lowest karat gold that can still be sold as “gold” in the US.

Successful card BST transactions with cbcnow, brogurt, gstarling, Bravesfan 007, and rajah 424.
Looking at the temperatures needed to make this material I wonder if a smelter can process it. Would you be able to sell this "gold" for melt?
<< <i>AWESOME! An unscratchable metal that can be scratched with a diamond... Odd that they headlined the article with unscratchable then the first paragraphs says that it is scratchable. >>
To be fair, everything is scratchable with a diamond...
<< <i>I guess biting your gold coins to check purity will no longer work. >>
Sure it will. If your tooth breaks, you have 18K
<< <i>I have to wonder how easy it will be to work with this alloy... what is the melting point, will the components separate during melting, etc.

Not an alloy actually. It's a composite. I expect when you heat it up, the gold would melt out.
Machining would probably be the best way to fabricate it into items,
All in all, that is pretty cool!
