Camera tethering, liveview, etc - Remote Capture replacement for Mac OS 10.7 Lion

AkbeezAkbeez Posts: 2,699 ✭✭✭✭✭
I recently upgraded to an Intel Macintosh with the latest Operating System 10.7/Lion. Much to my dismay, my old favorite tethering software from Canon (Remote Capture) was no longer supported with the new OS. I've used this very successfully for years in my coin photography. Has anyone found a decent replacement? I use an older Canon G series camera that doesn't work with the newer EOS software bundles.

Remote Capture allowed live viewing, complete setting control, and remote firing. VERY useful and simple.

I've looked everywhere for a replacement that is still simple and not ridiculous in price. Remote Capture was a freebie with the camera.

Did you keep your old Mac? If so, you can still use it for Remote Capture.
Any Mac up through 10.6 will run the PowerPC type software, so another option would be to switch to a slightly older Mac, if you are not
too invested in the new one.

My venerable old G5 tower is likely dead (and takes up lots of space), and after using my new zippy macbook and the new features of Lion, I hate to go backward at this time.

I could load Windows too, but seems like there should be a nice photography utility out there that would work.

    Go Nikon.

There is no firmware update for the Canon?

I've already had to replace my old printer, other accounting software, etc etc. Ridiculous. Really trying not to have to upgrade more hardware.

Canon has not updated their software for Lion on older gear. Drives me nuts since my G series is still a great camera. Yes, there is software for Nikon...

I have Lightroom, but it will not work with my G3 (Powershot) camera...

The DSLR Pro software is for ... DSLRs... however, I emailed that company to see if they have something that would work.

Thanks -- anyone else have something that works?

I'll bet that you can use the software for the T2i (I believe the download is free), it may work!

Let's all chill out now. And to the point, this may not be the best forum to get the answers you're looking for. I suggest trying the dpreview.com forums or maybe fredmiranda.com.

I sure wish I saw this thread 2 weeks ago. I bought a new MacBook Air and a Canon T-3i after confirming with Canon that tethering would be fine. Not! So, I returned my Canon. I am told that the canon software will be updated "in the first Quarter of 2012" which means, I suppose, by March 31. I'll be holding my breath. Canon is a little behind in this endeavor.
