I bought this from HLRC - and his scans made the coin look washed out. Here are the professional images. This is what the coin looks like in hand.

I have been on the look out for an 1847 Large Cent -
and as this is not my arena of expertise, is this date
plagued with poor strikes at the stars ??

I agree with that, though obviously PCGS finds it "market acceptable", as would I.

I think it's been dipped more than once over the years and wish it had it's natural skin/patina.
I would find that distracting.
Let's see your large cent -- 1847 isn't a particularly easy date to find nice.
Thanks for sharing...Mike

Mike, the photos/scan looks too much like a scan, looks to be totally void of all luster in comparison to your other 1847 coin. The image looks like a scan, I hope it does not look that dipped out in hand. If it does, I would find another example I think. Good luck with your birth year set!
Not really looking for much these days but if I were, it might be a toner.

And to think I bought this coin for your Christmas present, Dimeman.
Looks like it's been dipped... It arrived today and it's off to get
a real image not a scan ( it's nicer in hand, trust me ).
"Why an 1847 set" ? It was a 100 year coin when I was born !
Thought a decent set of all denominations would be neat.
Gold might be a killer though...

Today, I was given the opportunity to purchase one of the cleanest 1847 Half Eagles I have ever seen in AU 58
[I finally broke down and bought unlimited band width at Photobucket and moved the 1847 images to a new file.]
Sweet !!!

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
Nice year for a date set.
I think it'll cross but I really don't know until I get it in hand.

<< <i>I was an underbidder on the dime, really liked that one! Nice to see you got it Mike. >>
I've always loved the unc 1847 dime as the sleeper of all seated coins for that year. And a toned MS62 is a tough one to come buy. I've only owned one unc and that
was an amazing 90% proof like (but dipped) MS63 back in the early 1980's (later graded MS63 at NGC). That coin had a monster strike that was close to a full proof striking with
very thick rims, deep reeding, and a lot of wire rim. Looked more like a prepared medal than a business strike. I wonder where that coin is today? By today's standards probably a 64. Funny thing is that when I bought it in 1984 for $500 I first thought it was a cleaned piece of crap because it had almost no field luster and some light frosting on the figures. My seated dealer suggested to me to buy it and forget about it. He was right. But the market didn't appreciate that kind of coin until 20 yrs later....long after I had sold it for not much more than I had paid.
