Toners to share:

nwcoastnwcoast Posts: 2,906 ✭✭✭✭✭
Greetings:
New member here and have been spending a lot of time reading the threads about toning and Rainbows.
I know that these likely don't qualify as true Rainbows but I thought I'd put them out there for comment regardless.
I've never shared them with anyone actually since I inherited a nice collection of rolls from which these were taken.
I have several actually and these are just a couple of the nicer ones.
Just wondering if anyone thinks they would be worth sending in for grading. Most are not pristine as you can see.
Lots of bag marks on many of the coins.
Any comments would be welcome.
Please forgive the photography as I just did quickie shots in the window for now. I

It looks pretty, and nice toners do bring more money.

On the basis of what you said (lots of bag marks) let's guess 60-62. A run-of-the-mill 1884 in PCGS plastic might be worth $50. Bump yours a bit for eye appeal.

It's your call on grading, but I would not spend $30+ dollars to have a $50-80 coin graded. Maybe better photos would change my guess on its value.

    Welcome to the forum!

I disagree. I'm not sure if that's the same coin. If it is, I'd give him $150 right now for it with those tiny pictures.

I agree with coinkid. That is pretty nice toning. Maybe not true Monster as everyone likes to say but pretty close. Good tone symmetry, nice defined bands and overall anice clean pattern of toning and great colors.

I like the toning but a little dark for my taste

    Pretty coins.

Interesting. The toning of your Morgans is classic bag toning, but you mentioned that the coins are in rolls. The classic toning for a rolled Morgan would be end of roll (EOR) toning, which tends to have linear features. Here's an example of EOR toning.

Am I the only one that thinks that looks like a heated pattern rather than classic bag toning?

Wow, I'm glad that some of you folks have gotten a kick out of the coins and thanks for the interest!
I'll try and get some better pics in a couple of days.

These coins came from a hoard which had been in rolls which were buried under ground for almost fifty years. I inherited the collection and just pulled some of the rolls out of the safe deposit box and was going through them today. I had pulled aside some of the nicer ones when i first aquired the collection but found more nice ones today.

I suspect they picked up the bag toning before making it into the rolls. Some of the rolls have solid tone action on the end coins. Some are gold and some purple on these solid toned ones.

I'm really not posting these to sell them at this point. I'm sort of in love with them myself at this point in time.
The two photos i posted are of different coins as all of these are only toned on one side.

I truely can't imagine them to be artifical unless folks were doing this in the early 60's- even then, they would have been separated out like some of the other nicer coins that were't just in rolls. They were in plastic roll tubes- not paper rolls.

Those are pretty attractive toners you have there. The obverse toner if graded around 63 should be saleable in the $450-$600 range if not more. The reverse toner if 63 in the $250-$450 range. Only have one angle to see the coins at so that is just a guess but they look like very pretty crescents. I'd say it would be worth sending them in to get graded.

Those are both very standard bag toned crescents and I bet they are brighter in-hand. Certainly not possible to tone like that in rolls.

    Wow!! Thank you Brandon!!
I took a look at the gallery of Toners on your web site and noticed some there that are very similar to some of mine which I hadn't thought
'that special'. I guess I'll take a closer look at some of the ones that initially didn't catch my eye and consider sharing those as well.
Very nice gallery there and informative web site as well! Cool pics!

My main consideration in having them graded would be for protection, documentation and relale value eventually when I (or my children) go to sell them.

Someone in another thread on toning had recommended a quick acetone dip - to stabilize- a mature toned coin.
Would many on this board agree with this?

    Thanks again

Let's see some good photos! If it's not very baggy I agree it could be worth something. Maybe you were being modest.

You might be right... Looking at it again, the coin with the obverse toning is pretty NUTS gorgeous...
And I was speaking "in general" for many of the rolled Morgans and about half of my toned ones when i said "baggy".
The coins in the photos are actually pretty clean...
And I'm thinking now that it's without a doubt worth grading.. I hope I can capture the colors well.

You can take Brandon's opinion on the toners to the bank 7 days a week.

Thank you all for your encouraging comments. I had a fear that if I sent these in to be graded, they might question their authenticity being that
they've got such crazy colors. I would have been pretty bummed given the history of these things.

Here's some slightly better pics of the rev toner and one other one.
I won't have time to shoot better photos for a couple of days. I've got to set up my old copy stand to do pull it off.

I dont think they would be questioned for a second and I would send them in if they are at least, as far as you can tell, uncirculated. As Brandon said even in MS 63 they will bring you a nice premium well over list, if you ever sold them. I would look up the better dates in better condition and start there if you only want to send a few in as a test run.
