...how's he make any money shipping them for free?

I think we've discussed similar auctions, before, but I'll be danged if I can figger out how this business model works?

Is he trying to boost his seller rating or feedback? Clearly monetary profit can't be the objective here.

Hey, I've got a bunch of crapola Wheaties I'D sell at face, but I dang sure wouldn't wanna ship 'em for free!

Also, how do Ebay and PP calculate the final value and transaction processing fees if the auction ends at $0.01?

lordmarcovan · December 13, 2011 5:43AM

This one, laughable though the "local pickup" option is, makes more sense to me. That's a new seller building feedback.

He's just buying feedback.

this is my general hypothesis.

and profit will eventually be the motive once "Top Rated Seller" and the 20% discount on FVFs is achieved.

eBay fees will be 0.00 for auctions closing at $0.01 and 0.01 for auctions closing at $0.06

PayPal fees start with a 0.30 base minimum plus 2.9%.

He is buying feedback to try to balance out all the negative feedback he gets from his 1/2 pound ( $5.20 ) 90% silver auctions that he sells for $250 ( 50X Face )

lordmarcovan · December 13, 2011 5:56AM

Seems like a lot of hassle and expense just to buy feedback. I'd sell something digital or virtual- recipes or gawdknowswhat- which could be "shipped" electronically. THEN a bunch of penny auctions MIGHT make more sense.

shorecoll · December 13, 2011 6:04AM

Maybe he has a container full of Chinese Morgans, but he figures no one will buy them until he gets his feedback up.

yup, the discount for that 20% is worth losing money on some low-dollar items

i think for the christmas season it is another 20% so 40% total, pretty amazing with the no listing fee listings

most inexpensive yet most effective marketing medium on earth far as i know dollar for dollar, ebay that is
.
