I'm excited about my newp, so thought I'd muscle in on the "Copper 4 The Weekend" franchise and start my own for this weekend, since it appears to have been more than a week since we last had one.
Yeah, it's a Darkside coin (ancients are the Darkest of the Dark), but I thought y'all might get a kick out of seeing a 1,900+ year old coin with a freakin' SPACE SHUTTLE on the reverse of it! Betcha didn't know the Romans were THAT advanced, didja?
Hey, reckon I should call the History Channel? Y'all know how crazy they are about all that goofy "ancient astronauts" stuff.

This is, as you may have guessed, a Roman orichalcum dupondius of the infamous emperor Nero, circa 64 AD.
The female figure on the reverse is Victory. What looks like a space shuttle about to launch into the back of her head is in fact her wing, of course.

Very nice example broadstruck. I've been looking for a gem of this type for awhile. Still not found one I fell in love with. I guess patience is a virtue!
Some just look really cool when they are large and you can see every detail

<< <i>LordM, I'm sure you could get you new coin on Ancient Aliens or some such show. I'm having a hard time seeing a wing, but a veerrrrry easy time seeing the space shuttle. You just need to act as if it really is a space flying machine and I'm sure they would jump all over that. I do get the feeling that would not be in your nature though, you always seem very straight up. >>
Amazing thing, the power of suggestion, ain't it?
Here's another from the Wildwinds database.
Does she look more "winged" there? It's hard to not STILL see a space shuttle now, isn't it?

Ankurj- I'd spank you for "cheating" with the gold coin, but then I'd be in trouble myself, since the Roman coin in my OP is orichalcum (technically brass), rather than copper- so mine's alloyed, too. Anyway, you get a pass for the gorgeous half cent.

<< <i>Darktone- what a purty pile o' Indians!
Thanks! The one is an original roll of 1902's and the other is a original group I bought from the PennyLady last year.
You read my mind. I was thinkin' of your "UFO" jeton when I posted this.
Where's that picture you had of the other type- the "Wheel in the Sky" type?

Oh, and I love that Roman shuttle!
