unexpected Numismatic find

Greetings from the currency side of the board.

I collect junk...er...artifacts from the Phoenix Hotel, Lexington KY, which was torn down in 1983. I saw, on ebay, a letter from the Daniel Boon Bicentenial committee, 1937, and bought it cheap, not paying a bit of attention to the contents of the letter.

Well, low and behold it was from the commission to a man explaining how/why there was some sort of change in coins being offered by the committee. Apparently the man issued a complaint about something and this was a nicely worded "go get bent" letter.

Was the Phoenix Hotel used for state government offices at this time? Your letter is quite interesting.

The hotel was home to several business over the years. It had office suites and even was home to a local radio station up until the time in closed in 1977. I think, based on what I have read, there may have been apartments there, as several people's obituatries read "Resident, Phoenix Hotel."

The state government probably rented space for this short-term commission in the building. Lexington is about 40 miles from the state capitol.

The second paragraph, I must say, consists of such extremely large run-on sentences, the likes of which I have not seen previously in such a letter written by any of the employees of such mints as Phila., not to mention any other officials associated with Western Mints such as Denver or San Fran.

Yes. I think Mr. Dunn was p!ssed off at Mr. Sletzer and was composing fast. Poor man wasn't getting paid and had to deal with BS in Washington and carping from a customer.

so, over 70 years later and nothing has changed with special offerings from the Mint.

    Lots of Hassle.

(I'm not knocking the commissioner. Just the way things work.)

I must say I totally agree with your analysis and speculation, heretofore notwithstanding the current trend to ignore punctuation, speling, and other matters of English with respect to our native and basturdized tongue (and whose rules are usually ignored on these Boards) but perhaps it was the typewriter keys sticking at important punctuation junctures that created the lengthy sense of not being able to stop at a period. Period.

Your eloquent statements reflect the well-considered assessments and observations of an extraordinarily cogent and organized mind whose ability to articulate prose in the proper Queen’s English is refreshing to see and I am sure all on the board appreciate your ingenuity, faculty, wisdom and indefatigable analysis without which our understanding of the aforementioned document would be incomprehensibly diminished. I think Mr. Dunn is to be commended for the manner in which he replied to Mr. Seltzer. Surely Dunn donated many an hour as well as his own money ( this was during the great depression) and to be accused of stealing clearly rankled him.

I also say that we desperately need more people today of Mr. Seltser's mindset. Peole unafraid to demand to know where every dollar is going and why.
