Help me understand the PCGS Set Registry - I don't get it

hchcoinhchcoin Posts: 4,843 ✭✭✭✭✭
Quarter Collector has a link to the following registry on the bottom of his posts. Here it is.

The Hunterdon Collection

I love looking at the set registries but I guess I don't understand them. I have poked around on PCGS and read about them but I don't really get it.

1. How can there be a Pop of 1 and Pop Higher 1?

2. How can this set be the number one set of all time if it is only 25.77% complete?

3. Wouldn't the #1 set of all time be the most complete by die marriage and also the highest grades?

4. Also, taking the 1822 as an example from the Hunterdon Collection, it is graded VF 35 with a Pop of 7 and Pop Higher 59. What does this mean? To me it sounds like there are 7 VF35's and 59 graded higher than VF35. How does this impact the set rating and rank?

Thanks in advance.

    1. There could be only one ms-67 and one ms-68 in the total population. If you own the ms-67, then you have a pop of 1 with one higher.
    2. Because no one has ever completed the set in that registry any higher.
    3. Highest grades have nothing to do with completion. Die marriages do not impact most registry sets.
    4. You are correct. There higher the grade, the more points you get.

    1. Imagine you have an MS66 coin. There is only one MS66 coin. Pop 1. Imagine there is only one MS67 coin.

    Pop 1/Pop Higher 1.

    2. It's the only set, period. How can it be anything but #1?

    3. Yes, and it is.

    4. You are correct.

There is likely some place you can go on the PCGS site that will show you what the numbers mean and how they come up with them.

Where do you see that it is the only set? I must be having a bad day cause I don't see that.

The best way to see how it works and understand is to create a set for yourself. The introductory instructions do a pretty good job explaining how the whole thing works. Once you add a few of your coins and create a registry set with them, find the "What If" link and see the point values assigned to each coin in each grade.

This shows you all the sets currently in the Registry and the all time rankings. Only one participant.
