What causes this uneven toning? Dipped?

Here is an 1849 seated dollar that is featured in the upcoming Heritage sale. Anyone have a guess what caused this splotching bright and dark toning? Is this an indication that it has been dipped?
Thanks

    I would think so.

From those tiny images it certainly appears as though that coin was dipped and the toning might be from dip residue.

Sorry for the size of the pics. I've seen a few bright coins like this, mainly early/mid 19th century stuff. PCGS graded it but is it market acceptable?

If you're in the market and you accept it, then it is acceptible to you. What one person likes or dislikes is an individual thing. I like unmessed with coins no matter what they are white, light tone, monster, but if I can tell or think dipped I pass. Some people are just the opposite of me and want all their coins dipped.
