The 25th Anniversary ASE Set Thread - Part II

  • << <i>Just something I picked up on while checking out my opened set. This may have been covered elsewhere, but here goes. The capsule that the coins are stored in has a small ridge running the circumference of the capsule on one side. This ridge is smaller in diameter then the capsule itself. It is meant to sit inside a small ridge inside the mint packaging and keep the coin firmly in place. If the coin is placed in "upside down" it has a tendency to fall out fairly easy in transport. If put in correctly, the coin sits in it's spot and it takes a pretty firm push to push it out. Interesting to me that coins popping out in shipment may not have necessarily been a mint packaging problem, but a mint packing problem. BTW, all 5 coins of mine are meant to sit eagle side up.

+++ We are most aware of the issue you speak of, but have placed little creedance to such a fact. As far as we know, it really makes no difference as to which side the coin faces; for it snaps in place. Whether obverse side seated with the 'lip' or reverse side seated with the 'lip', makes no difference. This is bordering on the sublime, really meaningless.

  • << <i>Well, guess that blows my conjoined twins theory out the window. >>

Casman, that 2011S you sold me in a regular ASE airtight instead of the original mint capsule...why was that. I just realized that after this discussion and posted picture of the original capsule!

  • << <i>Thank you for the thoughtful responses.

My only reason for grading these would be to better benefit my family when they go to sell these (after I'M departed ;-) )
My experience in selling coins, before I knew better, has left me a bit jaded, and I'd hate to see the same thing happen to my family.

When there are huge jumps between grades, it only makes sense to have items that might benefit from this 'third party justification'.

Where the 'milk spots' come in.....
They evidently take some time to show up and are a product of storage.
If I have them graded now.... and they grade high....
Am I correct that they are more likely to hold their value 'down the road' then those with 'milk spots' that aren't graded?

To be honest with you, I'm new to the whole grading process. I've purchased some graded coins but have never submitted anything to be graded.
I'm going to be ramping that up though, in preparation for the eventual liquidation of my collection, though hopefully that won't be for a LONG time!

Thank you again all.... for your collective knowledge, experience and willingness to share.

    Rick >>

+++ Our ASE, since 1986, have no milk spots. Some say after three to four years, they may be noticeable. Never seen any on our coins for over twenty five years. Maybe, we have special coins. The fact is, we have seen the "milk" spots in pictures, but we do not have any. If this has not happened to us, we really cannot address any issue as to future complications. We care not to look that far down the road. However you look at it, "You don't lose". If you are concerned with picking up $1,000,000.00 more (a joke), have them graded ASAP. There is not much leeway, in terms of money between graded and raw, regardless of "milk" spots; believe it or not.

I have no idea what you are talking about, but if you have more, I'd like to see what you are calling a regular airtight? It was sold in the same capsule it arrived in, and they are all the same.

  • << <i>

<< <i>i put this in the previous thread...

the mint packaged them into the box upside down, the 'A25' label is on the bottom on the set

the shipper(s) did nothing unusual, they throw the boxes around like always.

all the jostling during flight/transport and the coins are easily dislodged from the holes, whether they were pressed in firmly initially or not.
i tested a couple, some were better than others...

all 5 of my sets had at least 2 capsules loose IN the display case, a couple were scratched.

all 25 coins were obverse to the viewer in the display. >>

Thanks fivendime. I figured it may have been detailed, but well, no more thread. Interesting that they would put the coins into the plastic capsules "upside down" so that the way they theoretically should have been shipped was eagle side up to the viewer. >>

+++ Ours were all eagle side up, no scratches on capsule. We are hearing numerous issues but we have not seen any. In addition to this, what do you mean that the A25 label is on the bottom?
  • OK,our host has it now for grading and I requested all OGP back. I'll let you know.

Pictured below (from erikso1) is a typical unique mint capsule with the raised surface on the picutred right side (normally exposes the obverse of coin when received from the mint). These capsules are pretty unique to the US Mint, as I have researched their source with no luck. Aftermarket "air tites" are flat on both sides and come in a direct fit type based on coin diameter or a universal type that uses varying sizes of foam "donuts" to hold coin firmly inside.

I think if instead of referring to my point as boarding on the sublime and rather meaningless, if you took the time to read it you would notice I was referring to coins packaged exactly as yours are. Eagle side up. The fit is much, much snugger this way, at least on mine. Obverse side up and the coins fall out very easily ( 2 fell out on the ride home from work, 3 miles, highway). If all the sets were packaged eagle side up you would have a lot less coin capsules popping out and a lot less coins popping out of the capsule, floating around inside the box, at least based upon the evidence of my one set. This to me is very real and meaningful, to the collective "we".

Well, maybe the claimant can link the listing as it was shot in the same capsule it was sold in...And as for oops, what would be the point with saving an original capsule?

Edit: Well, I'm guessing this is the "S" allegedly in an airtight? Here's the listing and the capsule in the photo is the same one the coin was shipped in, looks just like the other 8 that I sold.

Don't worry about it. How could I prove it now anyway? I did check your listing's picture and the one I received is different, but I'm not going to bring it up again here. This isn't the right place for that IMO.

Well, let's see, you have accused me of switching the capsule, and I have indicated that is complete BS. There is nothing to settle. I'm satisfied that you're simply wrong.

People who can't figure out how to use a computer to post pictures on the forum. Arguments about what type of airtight was received.

Link picture is of an eagle in a mint capsule, not an aftermarket airtite.

Here's a side by side comparison, mint capsule on the left, aftermarket direct fit airtite on the right:

Funny, I was thinking more of those great Star Trek episodes with the collective BORG.

"RESISTANCE IS FUTILE" (not that there's anything wrong with that...)

Glad the old thread is back, this has deteriorated due to capsules and The BORG invasion.
Have bought and sold on BST, many references available when asked.
  • It's a shame the first thread has disappeared, but the fact this thread has devolved into a public dispute over a mint capsule has proven the modern haters right image.
