Well then, welcome aboard If you have been lurking for close to 2 years, I am sure you could see how, by the comments, you could be (wrongly) misconstrued as a past member (alt-ID).
I actually feel for PCGS in situations like this, that come up every now and then, when they get questioned, over and over, by people that hide their identities online. It would be different, I am sure, if talking with Don or HRH or someone else at PCGS, face to face, and ask them, in a reasonable tone/manner (remember, online wordings do not get across the same type of inferences as talking in person does) the same questions.
Over the years I have been here, I have seen the "how do I know they are my coins?" or "doesn't so-and-so get better grading because they are a dealer/bulk-submitter?", etc etc etc questions asked. They have been answered, again and again. From a business point of view, particularly a publicly traded one, I would be doing my best to keep things on the up and up, and I am sure PCGS is as well. To be questioned about it, over and over, seems silly and could get on one's nerves.
That said, yes, it is interesting that the 70s seem higher, but without knowing more (ie....how many were hand-carried so less bumping around in transit), etc, I am not going to throw potential stones.
I received 32% of 70s. The mint shipped to me, by UPS, then I reboxed and shipped to PCGS, by USPS. I got one 68 and I did not get a complete 70 set. Regrettably, it is what it is. I wish I would have gotten a 70 for the 2011-S, but I didn't. I haven't seen them yet, but I am not going to blame PCGS "because everyone else is getting those as 70s". (not pointing to you, as I am generalizing by the above)
It's called integrity and it is why collectors pay the most for PCGS certification. When someone questions your integrity, particularly in public, you tend to get offended. The more integrity you have the more you tend to be offended.
<< <i>If I have submitted 5 sets for grading, what would be a reasonable expectation on my part for the result? >>
best guess is found in looking at the population reports (members only) for the coins/grades in question. Pop tells how many of each grade have thus far been awarded and when compared to total submitted for grading gives you a percentage for that grade. Doesn't guarantee anything but does show you the trend.
It is my understanding from speaking with a manager at PCGS that there are different people who grade bulk submissions vs. standard submissions, at least for some of the modern coins.
This is their playground where the rules are clearly posted. If you don't like the rules of this playground, go find another playground. However, when does the First Amendment come into play? Just asking....
"What we are never changes, but who we are ... never stops changing."
It is sad when a few needless postings about grading and favoritism toward a certain group spoiled the intent of the thread. I believe there are some inappropriate postings lambasting the host of these forums. It is a sad commentary that we can't just act in a mature and civilized manner. If someone has a beef against PCGS, I am sure they will privately deal with it. To just throw out unsubstantiated comments does bring down the integrity and usefulness of this open dialogue. If this is what it takes to sent out a message, then we all must check our personal and malacious words at the door. Just my personal opinion.
<< <i>This is their playground where the rules are clearly posted. If you don't like the rules of this playground, go find another playground. However, when does the First Amendment come into play? Just asking.... >>
Freedom of the press belongs to those that own one.
I think there’s a pretty simple way for a TPG to publically validate their grading fairness...by consistently publishing population report figures over time, perhaps adding a new week's worth of data to a living chart each week...not just publishing cumulative to date figures. The resulting time-phased graph would show pretty conclusively if grading standards are maintained over time, falling within a statistically meaningful band...or not.
In fact, if I were the boss of a TPG operation, I’d want to see that kind of data on a regular basis, as it would constitute a pretty good, and simple to digest, quality control metric.

The First Amendment comes into play when the government tries to put you in jail or censor you for what you say. Absolutely not in effect on a company message board.
But it's still a poor business decision for any company to so heavy-handedly censor a message board that its paying customers swear to never again do business with that company, or that the company is perceived as covering up problems rather than addressing them.

I agree with you. Given the way the economy is now, this set has done very well and has sparked renewed interest in the hobby. Back in 2006, we were in a boom period in the economy. The Silver Eagle program has been a blessing to the hobby and has become a linchpin for modern collectors. Thank you, President Reagan.
Speaking generally...because I see this on many different boards...
I never could understand the mindset of folks who seem to think that they have some God given right to post anything they want on a private message board and/or want (for some inexplicable reason) to out-and-out insult the hosts...the people that allow them to post, for free... and then have the temerity to get hacked off when they get nailed for it.
It's like having people over for dinner and having them complain amongst themselves- right in front of your face- about the type of food and brand of wine you are serving, the decor of your house, and how ugly your kids are.
Can you say INGRATE?
I for one won't miss the thread all that much, and personally I hope the mods get more proactive about poofing redundant threads. There's no reason to have 10 different threads about different facets of the exact same subject.
Very surprising decision....raises more questions than it suppresses. Why not simply lock the thread? I just skimmed the Terms of Service again, and did not see where PCGS owns/controls this site. I apologize, but I must have missed this information somehow.
The free expression of ideas is of far greater importance than any forum...or its present controlling interest.
Having read most every post in the now censored/deleted thread, it can hardly be said it was some kind of bashing ground for the forum generally. Or even for the TPG's generally or specifically. The healthy discussion of member experiences with collecting, grading, or the decision not to grade, facts and historical backround on previous mint offerings and how the orders were handled, etc. etc. was all very valuable information to the community and to collecting itself. Granted, there was considerable chaff in with the wheat, but that's not the point. It was an active and popular discussion among for the most part intelligent and courteous participants of a topic of mutual interest.
Was there a statement from the Moderator offering any explanation, or are we left to speculate? Was proper consideration given to the lost value of member contributions to the now "it never existed" thread?

This is not a public venue; we have to agree to abide by their rules and their moderation when we sign up to be able to post here. I don't understand why people don't get that. Not to mention the fact that there are clear posting rules permanently posted on the very top thread of this board...yet people still want to push the envelope-much like a bunch of kids trying to test their folks' patience to see how much they can get away with. They can lock a thread, poof a post, or poof the whole board if they wish. It's their venue.

With my comments now or previously, no disrespect was ever intended to any member or to the purveyors of Collector's Universe. It was not immediately clear in the registration process or from the general look of the site that this was a corporate venue for PCGS. Since I try always to be courteous and respectful, I missed the top thread where this disclosure is made. It is by no means obvious that CU is parent to PCGS or vice versa. And there is of course no disputing their right to do whatever they wish. Still, I fail to see where the thread in question violated the posting rules and it seems like an affront to public discourse to discard the voluminous contributions of so many participants with no explanation.
My voice is silenced. I apologize if I have been a bad dinner guest, it was unintentional I assure you.
Yes, it was their right to do so, but seems the pulling of the whole thread was harsh and a sign of being a bit too sensitive. If you are the best, why worry about a few idiots?
Nothing makes people on a message board suddenly behave than having to use their real confirmed names and/or publicly displayed IP addresses. We can talk when I get my 5 sets back plus 2 2011S's graded. >>
I'm for ya.
Honestly, we are in the best of times as hobbyists and as collecting is concerned.
There's more good stuff than bad. It's a matter of who sees it and how.

RIP Mom- 1932-2012
I'm disappointed.
Loos1...Collectors Universe is the parent company of PCGS,-so yes, PCGS owns the site.

<< <i>Very surprising decision....raises more questions than it suppresses. Why not simply lock the thread? I just skimmed the Terms of Service again, and did not see where PCGS owns/controls this site. I apologize, but I must have missed this information somehow.

Yes, I know, my statement is a little extreme. lol
addresses. People would never be allowed in a coin show wearing a mask and a fake badge and allowed to go around bashing
companies, individuals, dealers, flamethrowing, whining, telling one-sided stories, etc.

Are you sure you also don't want street and city addresses and a map pointing to where all your valuables are kept?

Frank---this is not one of your better thought out suggestions. Folks here don't want to reveal their identity as coin collectors to keep from getting burglarized or robbed. If your suggestion was implemented, I and many others would stop posting here.

<< <i>lost in someone 's decision..... any dealers have a buy and sell market for the 2011 set ? in graded condition ? >>
APMEX will soon. I believe they're just waiting for sets to come back graded. If you check their site, you can ask for an email alert when they become available.

IMO he was suggesting that this type of behavior will continue (everywhere, not just here) IE no reason for respect.
users with banned IP addresses will create a new login and create a hostile environment when they feel wronged, justified or not.
anonymity breeds internet tough guys.
these are the same people who would not be invited for dinner a second time.
and make you question why they were invited in the first place.
