Long story short, I first found this site back in 2000 when I had about 8 years Active Duty service in the United States Army. Since then I have met many good people and a few not so good people here on the forums. Though I have not been as active on the boards as I would have liked, I have four deployments in this same time frame and frankly I have just been busy. The good news is I have orders for my next move On 31 July 2012 I will transition to the civilian workforce and retire with honors with 20 years, 3 months and 8 days of Active Duty Service. I want to thank all the supports that have been there for my Soldiers and I over the past decade and I look forward to rekindling my numismatic hobby in the coming months.
So, to keep this official, with a 20+ year commitment What coin should I purchase as a retirement gift to myself to spark my interest back to the hobby? Feel free to offer unrealistic (For fun), manageable (monetarily wise) and cheap (Sentimental options) ideas. Pictures and reasoning would be great too.
Thank you all for reading,
Ray

I suggest a nice classic head gold coin. They never go out of style.
Congratulations!

Can't beat spending some time looking for a nice frosty PL or Dmpl Common Date Morgan
Best regards..

If you have a collection of military challenge coins that you've received over the years, you should spend some money and some effort to have a nice display case built for them.
I didn't when I retired and I wish I had.

Hi Ray,
Congratulations!
I think that gold of some sort would be in order. You deserve it!
Thanks for doing the Lord's work.

I'm thinking of anniversary dates ... and it never hurts to think big and dream ...
how about one from 200 years before you joined, when our country was in it's infancy
I did say dream big right?!

Treat yourself to anything you want.....but I do like the 2011 penny idea.
Please include me in the very long list of grateful Americans.
On another note, how about a piece of warrior gold?

Minted in Amphipolis, could this piece have traveled an ancient route that you yourself have crossed?

Thanks for your dedicated service Ray, you are a great American Hero. I echo derryb's suggestion.
<< <i>I'd go with a 2011 $5 unc. gold US Army commemorative. Mintage should end up under 8K. And while your at it treat yourself to a 2011 $5 unc. gold Medal of Honor, also expected to end up with under 8K mintage. >>
