Mexican gold: 2 pesos.

I drove 3 hours from where I live to Yuma near morongo valley (Where my grandparents live). There was a coin store called Quality coins there, and they had a wide assortment of stuff. I'm interested in gold coins, and I told the merchant at the store there, and he was happy I was a collector of gold. He showed me a few 2 peso mexican gold coins he had (They're very small, about the size of a pencil eraser) for $40 each. Was this a good deal? They were all in a condition of at least BU and all were raw. He was also selling a 1/10 oz austrailian kruggeran for $50. (It had about twice the amount of gold or more than the mexican one). I couldn't afford either so I bought a 1 oz. buffalo nickel round of .999 silver. (It looks like a coin, he corrected me and said it was a "round"). I paid $8.00 for that. My grandfather was with me and he bought some very interesting looking pennies that I've never seen before: There were many, but the one he bought was a date of 1940 wheat cent, and on the heads side it had a raised sculpture of lincoln on it.

Gold content is .0482 oz.
These generally retail for $25 to $28 in the present gold market.
Other dates sell for more.

If you are still willing to pay $40 for Mexico 2 peso gold, have I got a deal for you.
BTW, Australia does not mint the Krugerand, South Aftica does.
Australia mints the kangaroo gold coins.

Well I paid $36 for this one already certified from www.brokencc.com. I hope they weren't the restrike Dos Pesos of 1945, if they are then you paid too much.......
Also, wasn't there some drama associated with the GoldCoinLover?

As soon as I saw GCL was the author of the thread, I knew we had a flashback on our hands.
A short time after my arrival on these forums (i.e. in late 2001 or early 2002), I bought a PCGS MS63 (OGH) 1908 USA St. Gaudens No Motto double eagle for 400 bucks on the BST. Talk about "the good ol' days", huh?
Collector since 1976. On the CU forums here since 2001.

<< <i>What is the story on the 1945 Dos Pesos? The only gold coin I own is an 1945 Dos Pesos which I have had for about 15 years, maybe a few more.

It's a bullion restrike of the 1945 issue. There's a few PCGS sample slabs with it,the only ones with a gold coin in it, still circulating on ebay, that say "With compliments of UBC , Gem BU" and they can be bought at virtually no premium at all over its melt value. They were handed out for free, but I can't say when or where. UBC was a Swiss bank, now defunct.

I'm still around. Just look in here once in a while but don't post. Spend more time on the precious metals forum.
