My New Box of 20 approach
...will be announced later.
Seriously, I do have a new "Box of 20" based organization of my collection which should serve to better focus my collection and to improve the overall quality and consistency of my otherwise unconventional style of collection. It is also assisting me to reduce my collection to a more manageable number of coins. I look forward to sharing this with you (and then being treated like a piñata afterward).

My core gold coin collection will have a Big Boy Box of 20 which will include my 20 best coins.
Additionally, there will be a box of 20 quarter eagles, a box of half eagles, a box of eagles, a box of double eagles, a box of foreign/misc gold (to include gold dollars, $3's, Stellas, territorials, etc.), a box of 20 generic gold coins, a box of 20 pre-Federal/foreign coins, a bullion box (for the modern crap) and a box of type coins (mainly seated/draped bust).
Currently, all boxes are full (or nearly so). In order to add a coin, it MUST replace a coin in one of the boxes. If I add a coin to the Big Boy Box, a coin has to be sold or, more likely, sent down to the minors and replace a coin in one of the other boxes, which then must be sold.
I think that this system will prevent me from overbuying and losing control of the collection and will result in a regular redistribution of the coins that do not fit, the duplicates, etc., and it will, over time, serve to force me to improve the overall quality of the collection.
Fire away.
<< <i>Just go for a box of Stella's
I thought the same thing.. I can't remember ever seeing Stella as plural before.
<< <i>Just go for a box of Stella's
When I was a boy, it was my dream coin. Now that I have seen a couple dozen, I have no interest in them.
I am thinking about reserving one box for NGC-graded coins because the buggers do not fit in the preferred PCGS Old Green Boxes, but I am not sure I have 20 keeper NGC-graded gold coins.
Lets see a box of 20 1795-1803 Eagles and ditch the rest!
<< <i>Sounds like a "box" of 220. Way too may coins.

It's a great idea for down the road. Maybe I should get one first.

It's not a new collection so much as it is a new approach to managing the old collection, especially in terms of bringing in new coins. I still like the same kind of coins I liked 2 years ago and 2 years before that and so forth. I just cannot continue to buy what I like without any structure or design. I think that for me, this new system might allow me to make smarter purchases and more promptly discard the coins that do not fit or get upgraded out.

I do the same - Core box then a box of Doileys, 2.5's, 3.5's, Dave Hall flips, etc.
Fat chance.

In any case, what does the fact that every few months you are modifying your "box of 20" approach into a yet new iteration tell you?

It tells me that you do not know what you are talking about because this is not true.
P.S. If you are starting boxes of 20, why not have separate boxes for $3 and stellas?
just so i have this right..................you're telling us you have approximately seven(count 'em, seven) boxes of Gold Coins?? i stand back in awe!!! and to think, we sat next to each other at a "Furum Luncheon" and i had you figured for an average Joe.
this is sweet and i truly am impressed(and humbled).

RYK: <<When I was a boy, it was my dream coin. Now that I have seen a couple dozen, I have no interest in them.>>
The 1879 Flowing Hair issue is not nearly as scarce as was previously thought. I am intrigued, for other reasons, that a Stella was RYK’s “dream coin,” when he “was a boy.” I collected Barber Dimes and Liberty Nickels. I dreamt about 1894-S Dimes 1913 Liberty Nickels. I was also then dreaming about 1804 dollars, 1856 Flying Eagle Cents, 1796 quarters, 1901-S Quarters, Ultra High Reliefs, and 1927-D Saints. I then thought of a Stella as a peculiar curiosity.

Which are the finest 1894-S Dimes? 07/31/07
The $4 Stella is just a curiousity that it too was one of my "keep dreaming" coins. Then again, I could settle on a Gilt pattern and feel quite
content, it nevertheless is not the same as gold!!!
I too dreamt of the coins you mentioned, with a couple others I would add and a couple I would exclude.

Ok, I decided to check back through the archives, since I apparently don't perceive time like normal humans do. So, as a correction, let's say "once a year," rather than any couple of months. Sorry for the exaggeration. And I suppose my question merely shows my dislike for the "box of 20," whether its the literal sense or in some metaphorical way which could be better described more directly. I suppose the question remains.

<< <i>Analyst, while the 1879 Stella isn't nearly as rare as the 1880 issue, it nevertheless garners a premium just by association...which you know.

Hmm. 4 gold issues
4 copper issues, non-gilt
4 copper issues, gilt
4 aluminum issues
1 gold and 1 copper $20 quintuple stella
isn't there also a unique copper $4 variant?
That's a box of 19. What would the last one be?

you will find your new system too confining. You will be miserable. It will work for a few months, then it will collapse as you will discover that you will be trying to discard coins that were previously wonderful purchases. Suddenly, they have to go? You will suddenly realize that you have to compromise your hard rule of a fixed number of boxes of 20's. You will realize that you need another box of 20 here, there and way over there, etc.
There is nothing wrong with your collection getting larger unless you made inferior purchases previously or unless you no longer have the ability to spend any more money to enlarge or improve your collection.
Everyone views things differently, and approaches may change over time with additional experience, market fluctuations, and available capital. At this particular point in my collecting life, I would rather have fewer better coins. Next month, next year, next decade, I might feel differently.
agreed that you might feel differently a month, year or a decade later.
This is my point. just be flexible enough so that you don't think of your collection as a failure just because you modify or even trash the boxes of 20 rule. On the other hand, do not hold your collection back because of a blind allegiance to your new rules.
