i'm not saying it isn't a D/D in the OP but the image of the OMM in the 2nd post looks different from the one in the OP
.
.
<< <i>Not only does it look different but the D is in a different placement too, higher and touching the 3rd leaf >>
you picked up on that one quick, well done!

<< <i>It's a D/D, but not the 501. >>
What do you think this one is worth?

Really, what makes a 501 so valuable? Just because it's in the cpg?
Edited to add.. I want what your smokin!

Let's talk about DEMAND! You have the die hard Merc Dime Complete Variety Set Builders...that are active... FCLOUD, DIMEMAN, KEYMAN64(me), LARRY MARTIN and FLOYD TURTLE. To my knowledge, only DIMEMAN is going after the varieties that the Reg Set does not call for...and then I might pick up a couple of pieces for fun here and there...and then the rest of the group picks up pieces by mistake and they just go into the collection when they are not the right variety. I think FCLOUD has a few he has picked up by mistake and on purpose for entertainment value. We all have. For instance there are 8 DIFFERENT 1936 DDOs but only one is included in the Reg Set!
Short story on demand here: a couple of us would like to have it but you are not going to get a good premium for it...it would just be a small thank you really. PCGS would only put "Minor Variety" on the holder I believe, please confirm. ANACS would put the exact one on the holder if you wanted it I believe. The coin is worth the most in a PCGS Holder just the way it is. If it is RAW then getting it graded would maximize value but you would not get your money out of it most likely or it would be close...so for UNC GENERAL - $20+?...along the lines what DIMEMAN said but since it does look nice from the photos...close to 65FB...a bit more but not much.
So, do you keep it or do you send it to one of us for your cost plus a small "tip" maybe. Your call. That's what it is "worth"...only what people are willing to pay for it. The demand outside of the registry set is really small unless you found a person trying to put together a complete 1942 Mint Set Together with every known variety produced for every coin that year...or something like that.
Had it been the actual 1942-D/D FS-501, your example would have been a new Pop Top. I currently have the Pop Top in 64FB, the only full band example right now. This would have been a coin that I would have fought for so I could keep the pop top status then I would have sold my 64FB...you get the idea. A couple of people(a couple out of the 5 of us) might go into a mini bidding war over the silly thing. There's your demand. A 1942-D is MS65FB PCGS according to the price guide is $45 but if it was the FS-501 and a new pop top and a bidding war happened....a couple hundred bucks.
I hope that answers your question.
Greg
Not really looking for much these days but if I were, it might be a toner.

YES! Not only because it is in the CPG but because the FS-501 (RPM-5) is the one that PCGS blesses for the Complete Variety Registry Set.

.
you could always go ahead and get it graded and attributed in a PCGS and make a goal to get the entire known OMM set for the year in holders
if you have them all someone would pay you a good price, i know i would for a complete known set graded and attributed in UNC/BU
.

I have that one or would be interested at around $20 like I said.
Oh, and I don't smoke.
<< <i>It looks like RPM-6 based on position to leaf.

A 65fsb is worth more than 20.00. I could see this coin in a 66.
