How to ship 25th anniversary box

Yes, this is another thread about this darn set...

I am going to be selling my sealed box with the 5 sets...
I would like to know how most of you are shipping this.... Insured for $4500 with signature required? Registered mail? Suggestions?

I am looking for the safest way to do this whether i sell it on ebay or here on the BST.
Thanks.... and yes, I am serious.... I am not used to shipping this kind of valuable item.

I sent my first box via UPS Overnight, Insured for $4500. The lady at the counter said mark the insurance form as Medals/Jewelry. I don't know what would have happened if I had to make a claim though. Didn't seem right to do that, but coins weren't insurable for that amount. Luckily, it arrived the next day w/o any problems.

I just shipped three single-sealed sets today at the post office.

One set was sold to some guy on feeBay that had JUST joined and had three feedback prior to hitting the BIN button. I followed up letting him know my concerns, even after he had paid. He said I understand your concern but I joined eBay for this set. I said ok, well, just so you know, I will be shipping USPS Registered mail and to your PayPal address so I am covered. I also laid out the fact that the box was sealed so I couldn't guarantee anything inside the mint box. He said he understood. I contacted two other members that he bought sets from and one guy said he sent the set and another said he was in the process of sending. I then messaged the buyer telling him that I've spoken to two other members that sold him sets and we all share the came concern. He said he understands and does not intend any funny business. I shipped his set registered.

The other two members I sold sets to had well established eBay accounts but I did give them the run-down about how I couldn't guarantee anything, etc. One guy said he understands and the other guy said he totally gets it and doesn't even plan on opening the box...he plans on getting them graded. I shipped these two regular USPS priority. We'll see if I made a bad judgement call by the end of the week.

Your best bet would definitely be registered. You DON'T WANT IT LOST. I think that you would have a hard time getting $4500 from the USPS if it got lost.

I put a Priority label over the Mint label and insured for the value ($1,500) that I could prove and sent
to PCGS. Arrived there just fine. No additional packing or peanuts or anything.

That sounds nice and easy, I will probably follow suit by doing exactly that.

First, check the paranoia at the door. Just follow the rules that are set by whatever method you sell (ie....if you sell on ebay and paypal is used, make sure you only ship to registered address and signature required).

Next, ship USPS Registered. Unless you have private insurance, you are screwed with Fedex/UPS if you do need to file a claim. Also, I have never had a physical issue with any package I have sent registered....look at the box conditions for some of the board members of their UPS boxes they received the sets in. One poor dude over on the ngc boards even appears to have had UPS rebox his because it was mangled so badly. And they did it using 2 boxes to make a hybrid box. Looks like crap.

I, and many others, have sent/received quite in excess of $4500+ using USPS registered mail. The key to doing this is to try to get the corrrect paper-tape that is required and make sure completely tape all seams. If in doubt, go during a slow time at the post office and see if they will help you. Some have the tape and some may be out. My post office was super helpful the first couple of times I was doing this years ago. Now, they see me come in and know that the package is well packed and well taped and all they need to do is take my money image

Also, while some are shipping by putting a label over the label on the box you received, most of your buyers will NOT appreciate that. Don't cheap out....go spend a couple of bucks to get a larger box to put it in and use buffer packaging. Your buyer will appreciate it and you will have less issues as well.

I also agree with Jerry (Notwilight) in another thread recently.....do everything you can to minimize issues, ahead of time. Print clearly (or print out the address using a printer). Big and clear (non-smearable). Tape well and tape securely. In the case of this packaging, you can fully insure or you can ship registered, insure for ~$1000 (and self-insure the rest...ie, it is YOU taking the gamble). At the ROI you are getting on these, and how scared you already seem, just spend the extra bucks (it really isn't much if you are shipping registered) and insure for the full amount.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

I think of some concern would be sending a box sealed..............your buyer opening and finding some coins out of the holder or worse yet finding coins outside the capsule...........and then filing a complaint with e-bay or pay-pal about not as described............yes-no ??

When one insures for the "full amount", do you mean the full amount one paid to purchase them from the Mint, or the amount the buyer paid the seller?

Which do you want to get reimbursed for? If you sell, and have proof of the amount, why wouldn't you insure for that? I do on items like this.

Have heard of some people putting the 1 box into another box UNopened and sending ? how do you not know of what personal information from the mint (5 sets) would be in that UNopened box ??? I would open, check everything it being Brand New and in the box, uncraked, missing, etc. etc. what have you, then take caution when sending out with Insurance and the proper packaging. I don't see any problems after that !!

Are you saying you fear the fine folks at PCGS would abuse your info? PCGS has thousands of peoples Credit Cards info, there have not been any reports of abuse in 25 yrs!

Two things are evident from this ASE mania:

    1) Paranoia is rampant in the world today

    2) I would never have believed so many folks could get their panties all bunched up over what to do about a shipping box!!

Does anyone know if a mint package containing one set will fit inside a USPS Priority box?

I tried to place a set in a long medium flat-rate Priority mail box and it's about 1/3" too long. The mint obviously designed these to be a PITA to ship. And why do these sets need to be housed in these giant 3 lb plastic boxes?

Maddog, my Michigan (Downriver... well, almost) friend...

I asked this same question on another thread... and can also tell you from personal experience, there is limited "personal information" on the packing slip... at most, it contains the shipping address of the original purchaser, and that information is generally returned (by the TPG's, anyway) to the person who had the coins graded. It would be up to that individual to dispose of the packing slip, and perhaps, if it were requested, they might return it to you.

A larger issue looms here, in that opening the original box to REMOVE the packing slip, before you send it to whomever should purchase your set(s) from you will eliminate the potential for an FS designation on 3 of the 5 coins in the set (coins which have already been released earlier in the year).

UNOPENED boxes typically command a better price than opened sets anyway. And buyers PREFER, much less want and like, an unopened box, for this assures them the coins/sets within are original (same viewpoint of the TPG's)...

    Open them?

DON'T DO IT!! Unless, of course, you intend to keep these sets for yourself, and display each one proudly...

I wrapped my box in 2 pieces of thick packing paper with lots of tape, then wrapped that in brown paper that is USPS approved (bought from the Dollar Store) wrapped in lots of tape.

I then mailed it Priority Mail to California with $3000 insurance. The total was $77.10.

If you are that worried, don't do it. If you have ever ordered from the USMint, and looked at the receipt inside, then you will know what info is there.
If you open the box, you lose value. If you are fine with that, great. Also, if you plan to get them graded, and you open the box, then you limit the labels.
Again, if you are ok with that, fine.

Many of us are doing this knowing all the conditions and what is there from an informational standpoint.

I just mailed my box in a box off this morning. 20ft of the little bubble stuff around the mint/pbgs box in an 18x18x12 with almost an entire crumbled up sunday paper on all 6 sides.

Based on all the mint orders I've received, there's more chance of movement in the sets in that mint box than what I put that thing in. Had to tape the outer shut crosswise it was so full. Probaby could have put a wine glass in there and it would make it.
