What else do you have that is cool?

This is a question that we get all the time from people who are returning from numismatics after a hiatus from childhood. After asking about the 1-2 Lincolns they need for their book, this question invariably arises which yields wonderful and refreshing conversation. How many of you entered/re-entered the hobby this way? There are those in the leadership of this hobby who don't believe that it is the seeds of interest in numismatics planted with children yield the future collectors. Discuss.

IMO the statehood quarter program has planted seeds for the hobby in many boys and girls that will help ensure the next generation of collectors will find there way back after they stop collecting as kids.

I collected the Lincolns and Jeffs and skimmed off the old silver back in the late 60s/early 70s as a YN, not knowing I was one at the time. I was in my late 30s when my mother dug out the box with my old collection and said "Here, you store this..." That's all it took. As I got back into it, I saw color prints of toned old silver coinage, and on a whim while at a coin shop on a business trip, I bought a capped bust half dollar, 1830, that had some nice sky blue toning in the devices shining up through the luster. That's when the fever set it. I've focused my collection on CBHs (still have the Lincolns and Jeffs) and haven't regretted it for a single moment. It's been great to rediscover the love I had for collecting when I was a kid.

I never cared about the grade if a Mercury dime came along, as a kid. I never cared about the grade of any coin that was filling a hole, especially the Indian Head cents... Those days were the most cool. Now it's about having the highest batting average or the most expensive widget ever minted and it seems like it isn't "cool" if it doesn't have a sticker, but nothing is further from the truth.

Im a prime example of this. Collected hardcore from aroun 8-14 because of my dad, and lost all interest until this year (im 22). And now I'm head over heals
