  The coin was damaged. The copper plating has been torn back leaving the zinc core which very quickly corrodes.

  Thanks for the input peoples. I actually tried gouging another cent to see if it looked simular, no luck.

  Corrosion, could be natural or induced, hard to say, but definitely corroded.
