US-PI Philippines 1903-S 20¢ Curved Serif Discovery

Hello,

I recognize a few of the members here, and I know that I am in good company on this forum!

I believe that I have found a new variety of the key date 1903-S 20¢ with a curved serif on the "1" in 1903. Let me know what you think.

Not sure on this one , will have to look at more 03-S's. Possible serif broke off and curled upward??

I have never noticed a "1" shaped like this, but maybe I never paid attention, and they are all like this.

I have seen photos of mintmarks that broke off and imbedded on other pieces.

If it is unique, I would probably get other opinions from minting process experts. The error guys/"Coneca"

have a pretty deep understanding of the minting processes and what can go wrong.

I do see a crack at the top of the one.

i think it might be post mint damage.

I initially shared your opinion, however, there is no evidence to show that it has been damaged.

    Brett,

You'll have to enable Private Messages in order for me to reply to the PM you sent to me.

Go to Your Forum Profile, and select "On" for Allow Private Messages.

Hopefully that will then allow you to read the responses I already typed, which were tedious and lengthy. Otherwise, what I wrote was lost forever.

Doesn't look like PMD to me, but I really don't know. Nor do I have any experience with 1903-S 20-centavo pieces. Interesting!

Hope you'll activate PMs and become a regular.

BTW, I love the old (currency?) engraving in your avatar. Who is the fellow?

That is Miguel López de Legazpi, a Spanish conquistador who helped establish the first European settlement on the Philippine Islands. His portrait that I used for my avatar is from the Philippine 500 Peso notes that were printed by the USBEP from 1905-1944.

I apologize IloiloKano, as I had NO IDEA that PM's were disabled... I hope that you would not care to resend the msg?

Unfortunately, when you join up, the default position for PMs is "off". I think it should be the other way around- you should be able to receive them until you opt out, but eh, whatever. These boards are great and the software they run off of is superior to just about any other message boards I've used.
