  • Why does this thread still have a heartbeat? Holy cow.

Edited to add: In a brief moment of lucid clarity I realize it's probably because people like me make pointless posts to it. image

Did TonedRarities ever get his coin back or his $2000? He seems to have disappeared. I think this thread will be around until we get closure.

Apparently not. Buyer claims he sent it back on the 26th so it won't be officially lost for another 11 days or so. Last word is that the package reached the seller's post office and went MIA after that. I guess they are still looking for it.

I doubt that, but you never know. Certainly it is understandable that he would be concerned about a lot of hassle in being made whole in the event it truly was lost.

You've been here a long time... do you remember Scottieo who said he lost an 1804 dollar when it fell out of his pocket while on a construction site? I think he said it ended up in a fresh pour of cement.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

I'm gonna hijack this silly thread with another scenario.

    Please advise :

Customer notifies me that he's looking for a coin. I find the coin and sell it as an MS 64. Two months later he comes back and asks for his money because others ( 3 other reputable dealers) say it's scratched and would never even make a net 63 if it got into a holder. Buyer wanted it for his album which he first showed me before I went shopping for the coin. (another dealer found me the coin at the Baltimore show). I actually purchased 2. One for inventory ! Both were raw and under $400 each.

I reimburse the guy his money , and indicate that PCGS will get this coin. He states he'd like the coin if it makes the grade. I told him to find another dealer because I am fair and I disagree with those other dealers, but I'm outnumbered , see ? then I asked him to tell me who these other dealers were. He would not. I wanted to call them on their assessment.

Collector emails me recently, asking if coin returned and how much do I want for it ...
Coin is returned and is MS 64 + RD. It's sister is MS 65 RD. I want the initial sell price plus the extra fees to PCGS. That puts the coin way over price guide and I'll be stuck with this doubled die reverse for life now.

I paid MS 64 money and added my percentage when I sold it to him. Now I have more into the coin than it's worth. I'm insulted but I'm not ticked off. Who is wrong ? I know of 3 dealers who cannot tell the difference between die polish lines and Polish sausages, but it's refreshing coming here to tell you all. As for the collector: I think he'll crack the coin out for his album anyway. He just wanted the truth and now he will have to pay more for it.

Collectors who have doubts in their dealer are trouble. This was a retired teacher. Sheesh. Who ya gonna trust when your own teacher don't know what's what ! This is why a lot of people get "burned". They don't know Jack !

Some think I drink KoolAid.... I just use PCGS to PROVE and reprove. Is it worth it ? Not with collectors and dealers like that.

DerryB, the math is simple. It's the balance which is difficult.
Telephoto , I was an am confident in my grading skills. As a matter of fact, when the coin first returned, I told the buyer I would happily reimburse him because I trusted my eyes. Keep in mind, I was tasked by this fellow to find him the coin. I asked him to find another dealer to fill his collection. Apparently he knows 3 that he trusts more than me when it comes to "coins". That's all cool, too.
  • telephoto1telephoto1 Posts: 4,966 ✭✭✭✭✭
TwoSides: If you were confident in your grading, then why not just resell the coin raw? There are plenty of collectors out there that don't need a label to buy a coin. I'm just saying.
Why waste money (no offense to our hosts) having it slabbed when you knew it would bury you in the piece, cost-wise?

If you knew you were gonna get buried, why dis you a) buy it in the 1st place and b) send it in to be graded knowing the grading fees would assist in the burial?
    Not too smart.

Does it really matter if TR asked IN to send money to a third party, like a smart member here opined, $200 was probably owed and it is a novel way to pay off debt and not pay taxes ie who cares, that isn't what is important. Lets see what happens when the proper amount of time has gone by for the PO to do its own proper investigation and if all debts are sufficiently paid off, I am certain that now IN will let us know since he is he is here with us now. >>

So how do you handle a return if you have the down payment sent to someone else? If he didn't have the money to pay Ian, how was he going to refund IN? Or was Ian just holding the $200 in escrow?
