I won an 1889 Quarter in PCGS 66 at Stack's Bowers ANA Auction

I decided to attend session #9 at Stack's Bowers ANA Auction
- basically to see if a friend's Barber Quarters did well - and I saw
a coin I hadn't noticed before - an 1889 Quarter in a PCGS 66 holder.
I have been slowly assembling a complete MS 1889 set - as I already have
a nice 1889 Proof set - I was the only floor bidder - and the Internet/Mail
bidders had stopped - so I put in a floor bid and won the coin.
I called Stack's Bowers and paid for the coin and asked that they ship
after I got home from Chicago. I received three Express boxes today,
one from a friend who sold me some of his AU 58 Liberty Head Nickels,
another box came from Heritage which contained my Barber Halves
"Buy-Backs" and lastly, the box from Stack's Bowers.
This what I was expecting from Stack's Bowers...

This is what was in the box....
[ A good friend thought I was fibbing until I showed him the Holder's image !! ]

Of course, I called the Irvine, CA office and they advised me to ship it back
to them Express Mail and they gave me their corporate USPS Account number.
Sorry to say, but the guy in shipping must have been read the Riot Act -
and might not have had a job after shipping a $138,000 coin out in error.
I just hope I get my 1889 Quarter - and that it was shipped in error to the guy who
bought the 1821 Half Eagle.
//////// was day dreaming .... and I wonder what a Mercedes Benz 550 SLR AMG costs ??

<< <i>Yep, that 1821 has been wipe at least, obvious by the stars. >>
That's very obvious by the sticker included.

all kidding aside, I would try to return it also...

What did you do first? Check the address on the mail package? Look closely at the invoice--naming the buyer? Look up the auction price realized for the early $5?
Or schedule a one way flight to Bali, Indonesia?
Good thing for them you are an honest guy. Still waiting for my lots as well. If your quarter shows up I'll let you know
<< <i>Mike,

Dale,
My name was on the Express Mail box - I opened it up to
locate another box - opened that one - found an invoice
for almost 7 figures - one coin was highlighted - the 1821 Half Eagle -
ripped open the padded envelope and discovered my 1889 Quarter
wasn't there. I was very disappointed to be honest with you.
Now - if the envelope contained your Micro O - I'd have played
"Mickey The Dunce".
Seriously, this isn't the first time I've received coins not belonging to
me - a few companies have clients with the same name as mine.
Some accounts actually have my name as Mike [ FL ] Hayes.
This is the first time I ever had such an expensive coin sent to me in error.
I looked over the invoice a little better this evening - and the correct owner's
phone number is on it. Although I asked a manager at Stack's Bowers to please
call the buyer [ more to ask if he received my measley little quarter ] and let him
know his Half Eagle was safe and [ and at the instructions of Bower's representative]
that I would be mailing the coin back Express Mail on Tuesday.
I knew I should have paid for the coin in Chicago and taken it with me... oh well...

I can't afford either coin!
Enjoyed the story...
All of my coins are secure in a bank safe-deposit box.
Your smartphone pics are really good!
<< <i>Lucky for them the recipient is a good guy
Way to go!
<< <i>It would have been a mistake to think you could keep this coin (not implying this member ever thought of that but some relpies think that could have been an option). Even if they didn't figure it out simply when all coins are distributed and an 1889 quarter is still stittting in the box and the owner of that quarter has the same name as the owner of the missing coin they would have started a full investigation to track down a coin of that value. I don't think anyoned here would risk going to jail because they dangled the forbidden apple in their face and they took a bite. >>
Exactly they would have tracked that coin down and came after whoever had it with with everything they had. People have gone to prison when their banks have accidently put huge amounts of money into their accounts by accident and the people went on spending sprees. And the coin would have been nearly worthless since its so rare, it couldnt have been resold.

Yet all situations have worked out as there are still a lot of good folks in this hobby!
In all good conscience I couldn't even entertain the thought of keeping that coin;
I called the correct buyer this morning and he said he hadn't received any coins
from his large purchase. We discussed his buying habits as they are very diverse
and also discussed mine.
We are at a loss as to why one coin out of dozens purchased by him
would have been singled out to have been shipped - let alone to the
wrong purchaser.
His secretary [who picks up his mail] will go thru any shipments on Tuesday
and will check to see if my 1889 Quarter is among the coins.
This buyer is no casual purchaser - and he's fit to be tied - and plans on
speaking with Chris Napolitano on Tuesday.
In the meantime, I'm babysitting a six figure coin and wondering if and when
I'll ever receive my 1889 Quarter ...

You can't even send it back on your own as they need to arrange something due to the insurance value.

I'm not sure I would want a six figure coin sitting around my house over a long weekend. Especially one that wasn't mine. I think I would've went straight to the bank and put in in my SDB and then picked it up on the way to ship it.
Ron Castro of Stack's Bowers gave me their corporate Express Mail account number.
He did not mention if I should even insure it for a nominal amount.
Sometimes placing a max insurance on an Express Mail box will throw up a red flag to
would be crooks - and I don't want to complicate this matter any more than it is already.
agentjim007 - don't know what to say about your situation - but if you do receive an
1889 Quarter in error - please let me know !!
Broadstruck... that new iPhone G4 is the same one used to image the HT token you wanted.

<< <i>values aside, I like the quarter better. >>
+1
Many years ago I received the wrong lots in the mail. I took them back at the next coin show (was the following week, or shortly thereafter) and the person at the action house table treated me like it was MY fault for having the wrong lots.
If this happens again I will probably tell them they can have the lots back only if they come to my house when I happen to be at home. Or alternatively they can give 110 on my next consignment, although after the previous discussion I would probably be on the "no consign / no bid" list for a long time.

<< <i>Wow I would of kept it. >>
And you would have been in your total legal right to do so .. IMHO
Not that it would have been morally correct .. but financially well LOL

I don't think I would ever have the legal right to own that coin - even though it
was shipped to me. I wouldn't want it even if I could claim complete ownership.
Just as well its going back tomorrow. One less headache.
More importantly, where's my 1889 Quarter ???

..what go's around ; comes around
....and I remember this very situation coming up before and some fellers thought there was no legal obligation to return the coin -
