That's the problem I keep having. I find a coin I want, then I reach into my pocket and it's empty. How the heck is someone supposed to collect this stuff if they don't have any money?

Looks like a soap & water bath at some point but a great look and an easy sell at a slightly lower price point

It is a good looker albeit with a strong asking price also. If he had a BO on it I bet he'd get several bites.

I too like the look. However, if I had submitted that coin it would have been sent back as
genuine because of the staple scratch on the front.

It is one of those unfortunate one side is much much better than the other

unofficially I'll go vg8-vg10 obv with a vf20-25 rev. IMHO!

nice look though. i have always enjoyed that nice circulated look.

now if the coin isnt' an R7 and can be purchased under VF money for the variety it may be a coin that is a must have, there are numerous variables to effect the outcome

These half dollars are one of the most cleaned coins out there. No big deal, a little soap and water can sometimes do some good.

Nice original coin, but it's slightly overgraded, definitely overpriced, and that significant scratch on the obverse kills it for me.
Assuming it's not a rare die variety, I see enough of these around that I wouldn't even ask to have this one pulled out of a dealer's case
for closer inspection. Maybe I'm getting too jaded in my middle age.....

It may be worthwhile to send Alistair a message, he is at alot of shows and I believe he does mark things up on ebay....although I dont know that for fact.

In no way is this coin a VG. It may be closer to a F15 IMO but not VG. From my experience in this grade range PCGS coins graded a few years back are somewhat weaker than their NGC counterparts for the Bust series.

And what looks to be a scratch from the rim to the hair curls is actually a die crack.

the coin is cool as hell, and the "scratch" is a die break ......so why are folks still talking about a "scratch" ?

and yes , it's expensive - but you have to "pony up" for exceptionally eye appealing coins - it's nicer visually then 95% of similarly graded examples I have seen .

I bought the sellers 1805 quarter in a heartbeat ; I put my money where my mouth is !

There will be no buyers remorse for me on this one - and I'm looking forward to the years of pleasure I will get every time I look at it

A nice overall look on the 1795 dollar but some might find the dirt/carbon streaks distracting as well as the wipe lines in the right obv field.
As always, pleasing everyone is impossible.

Oddly, after reading this thread yesterday, I happened to run into the seller out at a rather obscure part of the sonoma coast....
I let him know about this thread, he was amused and basically said that he just marks his coins up a bit from what he pays.
The premium in this case seems pretty mild..... that is of course if you like it as a VF.

Yes, Alistair does pay top dollar for his coins as I have sold him many over the years. He is an honest guy and great too talk to as well.

Alistair has nice coins but it is hard to cherry pick/flip someone who knows what they have and they price it accordingly.

I suspect that if he pays strong for nice coins, usually he's going to be near the end of the line as far as flips go.

I might have stretched for that '95 dollar -but it had already been sold ............

I got the impression the seller must have lucked into a group of similarly looking old, old, type coins ;

a few of them have that "washed in soap and water" thingy going - but I like it -

it's a damn might better then what 90% + of coins from that era got .....namely a harsh cleaning : about 16 times over !!

I know a hellova lot less about early bust type then many ; but I have no problem spotting something special when I see it .

I checked T.T back 10 years to see their PCGS VG10 1805 Bust Quarters - NONE SOLD !

So I spent the evening going thru Heritages archives of every dang 1805 quarter they ever sold ; and 90% of them in ALL grades looked cleaned right off the bat .

So again - I'm thinking paying a big premium for a bust quarter that doesn't scream "cleaned multiple times" , that has nice denticles around the entire obverse ,

and has the actual date " 1805" looking as though it has less wear on it then most of the V.F slabbed examples I looked at is smart - real smart

It's nice, but is it an extra $270 over the last realized auction price at HA nice?

Seems like quite a hefty premium to me considering that the last one on HA looks quite original as well.

Groiny, I think you're going to be stoked when the 1805 arrives. It's got that original look indeed and there is some evidence for sure
that the coin may be more weakly struck than highly worn, so perhaps you may have even cherrypicked one !

Truth be told Alistair is a strong buyer, always the first guy I see at a show when I'm looking to flip.
I like his eye for coins, and this Bust is no exception.

I did buy a 1828 25/50 Bust quarter in an Segs F15 holder. Had a few scratches on it but crossed into a PCGS F12. Not easy to find in this grade or higher all for 1k Plus fees to holder.
Alistair was very generous to let me have it for this price. It was a risk however. Great guy to work has a great set of Bust quarters himself. Gave me plenty of inspiration on what to look for in a coin.

I had impulsively paid way too much for a coin that could be had much cheaper ......

I gotta say now I am pumped that my blind shot in the dark , aiming with no experience what so ever - might strike a nice bulls-eye
