Your PCGS Crossover Success

How many different Third Party Grading Services have you successfully crossed over to PCGS at the same grade or higher?

This is an important issue to me, since my core collection of Dahlonega gold coins are all in PCGS holders. However, nice, original Dahlonega coins are hard to find, so I can't afford to overlook nice coins in non-PCGS holders. However, when I am evaluating such coins for potential purchase, I make sure that I have on my "PCGS glasses."

Regarding crossovers to PCGS, I've had good success with ANACS holders (both the early small holder and the newer blue label holder) and PCI holders (green label). With ANACS, I've crossed two Dahlonega coins to PCGS, one at the same grade and one higher. My crossovers of PCI coins were for circulated no-motto Philadelphia Mint half eagles, which typically crossed over to PCGS at a higher grade than the PCI grade (these were graded by PCI in 1993).

I've had more trouble finding NGC-graded Dahlonega coins that would cross to PCGS at the same grade, so I tend to be very tough when evaluating NGC coins for purchase. By the way, I have never had an NGC-graded Dahlonega coin that crossed to a higher PCGS grade.

I'm no expert on the types of NGC holders.

One coin was purchased in 1993 (not sure what type of NGC holder; it crossed on the second attempt, a couple of years after the first attempt). Another one was holdered by NGC in 1994 and crossed the first time and one crossed on the initial attempt in 1997 (but I'm not sure what type of NGC holder it was in).

I've seen many NGC-graded Dahlonega coins that I felt were over-graded, including one that I bought at the 2008 ANA, in Baltimore. It was in an NGC AU55 holder, which I graded AU50-53. I had been searching for this particular coin, a very attractive, rare coin from a famous collection, whose aesthetic appeal out-stripped its technical grade. I knew the coin had previously been in a PCGS AU50 holder, priced higher than it was in 2008 (in the NGC AU55 holder). I paid AU50-53 money for it and today it is in a PCGS AU50 holder, with the provenance info on the cert label. I am thrilled to have it!
