Please define the difference between PL or DMPL....I had this discussion with my local B & M owner and somehow was more confused. He said that PL is prooflike on both sides of the coin and that DMPL has to have at least 8 inch mirrors on both sides.....he's probably right but I always thought that PL meant it was only prooflike on one side or the other but not both sides.....waiting patiently and humbly for my education....

How to tell
As an aside, many believe that at the time of the old green holders, it was a bit easier to get the designations, that PL and DMPL are one of the few areas where grading standards have become stricter.

Just for the record there are numerous DMPL surfaces and numerous PL and SPL surfaces. I've seen dmpl morgans that were literally like liquid mercury and others that were deep gray/purple/reflective. We have to remember each time the die struck a planchet or clashed together they lost a little bit of that brilliance transfer so there will be many borderline coins between DMPL and PL along with PL and SPL. I honestly think there should be a different designation for those scarce mercury surface dmpl coins and the ones that are deep purple/grey/reflective 8" to 10" field reflective. - I did forget to add it would be nice for those ULTRA scarce super-frosty device coins to have a special notation aside from the other dmpl-mercury morgans. There are more than enough in quantity to justify 5 potential designations. There are premiums paid for coins within the current designations, the only difference is they are all lumped together as DMPL. Much more work can and should be done to separate these for future generations imho.

You've all shared so much with me here is something I can give back. Hope it is ok to share, I found it downloadable somewhere on the net.
