I was watching American Pickers the other day, and they visited a guy who I thought summed it up pretty well. The point is not to own all the toys in the world, the point is to play with all the toys in the world.

I thought you were going to say taking shots from fellow CU members for being a collector of Tokens image

He who dies with the most toys is still dead and then it no longer matters.

The conclusion in the OP is similar to what mine was.

The bad thing about selling coins is that ... they're ... gone, once you sell 'em.

I want some magic leprechaun gold, that I can sell and rake a whole buncha moolah on, and then it magically boomerangs back later, to reappear, free of charge, back in my big cast iron cauldron again.

(You simply must store your magic leprechaun gold in a cast iron cauldron, y'know. It just isn't done any other way.)

Collector since 1976. On the CU forums here since 2001.

I learn a lot on this Forum.

    For instance gold storage:
    Cast iron cauldron - good.
    Garage- not so good.

The worst part is.... the coins i would like to own i do not have the funds for, or they are in collections that will not be sold.

The absolute worst part of the hobby is getting ahold of the checkbook from the coin warden when i am low in the "rat hole fund". There is "no strings" attached to any coin buys with the check book, it is a "ROPE". Every dollar that the warden sees spent on coins means 5 dollars for her projects. The reason for the 5 to 1 is the fact she can not determine the size of the "rat hole fund"

For me, that I don't own them all is not that bad. I just love seeing them if I can't own them. Still remember as a young man going into the exhibit room at the Smithsonian and seeing their national coin collection. I loved it.

Think about it. If you owned them all, there would be no there other coin collectors. The hobby would be very boring without the chatrooms, coin shows, coin clubs, coin shops, etc.

Worry is the interest you pay on a debt you may not owe.

The worst part of this hobby is but a fragment of the best part of it.

That's one of the things I've really come to appreciate about this forum. I can't own them all, I can't afford a lot of the stuff I'd like to have, so the next best thing is seeing other folks "share" their collections here and I can live vicariously through their coins. image

Oh, bugger. Now I am having an existentialist crisis. I'm worrying about running out of all forms of possible existence, since even a googol plex different combinations of universes, timelines, and states of being is not infinite and will eventually run out, leaving us with an eternity of reruns and "greatest hits" albums.

    Just go for it....
The bitterness of "Poor Quality" is remembered long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.
