Grade Opinion of my "Free" Seated Dollar.

UtahCoinUtahCoin Posts: 5,366 ✭✭✭✭✭
I placed a bid on a large lot of coins recently, mostly GSA's. I placed a strong bid as their were a few CC Morgan GSA that I felt would go DMPL, PL and MS65. When I placed the bid, I had forgotten to add in this coin. Surprise. I won the lot without figuring in the Seated Dollar. Anyway, I was right and rewarded with several DMPL etc. and a couple of MS65's So what would you grade the coin?

I agree with the scruffy XF45 opinion. But ya can't beat the price!

Possibly a gennie - but at least it hasn't been dipped to within an inch of its life!

Are those scratches on the right obverse field, or just bag marks? I love the dark, funkified look of it!

Bag marks. Did anybody notice the clashed die? (Between Ms Liberty's knee and forearm)

Genuine: an old cleaning and I think I'm seeing green (PVC?) around the date and around the "O" on OF on the reverse... XF45 if it does grade...

Looks like a 45 if it grades...not sure if it will grade due to the marks and funky toning but at least it has a shot and for the price....who cares image

I think it likely looks better in hand, even if it's as scruffy as it looks in the pics, I think it would grade at the 45 level. Seated dollars seem to get banged-up pretty eaisily, so the TPG's will usually allow a bit more abuse to slide into a holder.

    Awesome freebie!

EF45 Genuine? Not sure by the pictures if the "green" is verdigris or PVC. Looks like the toning is just "sitting" on the coin. Old cleaning/retoned?

I'd say EF45. I don't think that green is PVC contamination. Looks more like original lustre around the devices that has toned (also notice the blue/purple toning around the stars/denticles).

I had a scuffier one in an old (ANACS small size, I think) holder that was AU50 and looked worse than that. It was an 1842, also. Too bad I no longer have pix for comparison.

I'm gonna say 53, just to be contrary. And I see nothing that says "Genuine" holder, IMHO. Sure, it's got some scuffiness, but I think it's within acceptable levels.

Let's see how I fare in the prediction department when this thread resurfaces a few months later. Could be a proud moment for me, and could be an embarrassment. I've had plenty of both.

Edit- I now see the potential "PVC" others have pointed out, near the date. I suppose that is a concern. And I also forgot to take into account the difference between old, small-holder ANACS and PCGS. So XF45 as the others say wouldn't surprise me, I guess.

I'll stick with my earlier assessment and say it goes 53 if it grades, though. (Crossing fingers for ya.)
